Don - Absolutely gutted
Thursday 21 November 2019 - webmaster has today received news from Don that it has been decided that he won't be playing drums on Slade's 'Rockin' Home From Christmas' UK tour which starts tomorrow in Liverpool.
Don said "I am absolutely gutted not to be playing on the Slade tour at Christmas. I will miss seeing all my friends and fans that I usually catch up with at the festive time of the year - and also playing onstage with all the band. It's the case that I just can't do the tour in case I have a relapse with my knee / leg problem. However rest assured I will be ok for next year though... Will miss you all. Don XXXX"

Derek Powell - RIP Don's beloved brother
Don is very sad to let fans and friends know that his beloved brother Derek passed away on Sunday 6th October.
Don had flown over to the UK and was by his side when he passed away.
Don has sent the following message to the website:
"VERY SADLY, my dear brother Derek lost his life to the dreaded cancer last Sunday 6th October..…..
A previous complaint, pancreatic cancer, which he was cleared of some time ago, came back with a vengeance four weeks ago.
It then proceeded to spread into his bones, and according the Doctors he then really didn’t stand a chance.
Chris, his wife, and Ian his son and his wife Mel together with Hanne and me were at his bedside from 03:00am when we were called in by Chris.
Around 09:35am he opened his eyes, looked round to us all gave us, all a lovely smile and passed away SO calmly…….
I’m gonna miss you SO MUCH KID… XXXXX"

Don's new paperback standard edition available to order now!
Don's life story: 'Look Wot I Dun - My Life In Slade' by Lise Lyng Falkenberg and Don Powell - which was originally published in hardback in 2013 - is now available in standard paperback with an extra chapter that brings everyone up to date with Don's story!
The promo for the book describes it as follows:
"Look Wot I Dun is the story of Slade told through the eyes of drummer Don Powell whose life was shattered when, in 1973 at the height of the group's fame, he was involved in a horrific car crash. Unflinching in his honesty, Powell deals frankly with the aftermath of the accident that took the life of his girlfriend and left him with injuries that affect him to this day. Leader of the glam rock movement, Slade was the UK's biggest singles band from 1971 to 1974. Their many hits have become rock standards, not least of which was Merry Christmas Everybody, arguably Britain's all-time favorite Christmas song. This previously published book is now brought up to date in paperback format with an additional chapter from Don, detailing his touring activity over the last seven years, since the original release of his book in hardback".
The book can be ordered NOW from Amazon at a price of £16.99 - that for a special time has been discounted to £12.99.

Don catches up with Robbie at the Smukfest in Denmark
Don sent the website this report and pics from 7th August 2019
Smukfest, Skanderborg, Denmark.
I did my usual stint at the fitness centre at 05.30am then made my way home. I drove and picked up our good friend Marianne up from Billund Airport and drove her back to my home.
Then drove back to Billund Airport to pick up my long time friend from Wolverhampton, Carole Williams. She used to work at Astra Agency (used to be the ‘N Betweens Agents back in the ‘60’s). We’ve remained friends ever since. Drove to the Radisson Hotel in Silkeborg (my local) with Carole. Had tea with Robbie’s Dad Pete and goal keeper Kasper Schmeichel before Robbie's band arrived………… Our backstage passes were all arranged.
We drove to the Smukfest in Skanderborg - where Robbie Williams was topping the bill that night. Carole is a mega fan and I'd arranged at short notice for her to visit to coincide with the gig.
It had all been arranged for us all, along with my wife Hanne’s two main bosses, Birgitte and Lise Lotte, to go to the gig.
Met Gary (one of Robbie’s guitarists) first, then drummer Karl. Robbie next came out of the dressing room and greeted us SO warmly.
He posed for photos gladly with, everyone. Carole was a jumbling wreck. We all had a great time backstage with, everyone.
There were lots of dancers and female backing singers - and incredible lights.
It was a FANTASTIC concert to 55,000 people. We all had a great place to watch the concert on a platform above the side of the stage.
At one point a sofa was brought on stage and Robbie pulled a girl from the audience to sing ‘Something Stupid’ (his hit single he sang with Nicole Kidman) to her…
We said our goodbyes to everyone as they were flying back to the UK straight after the show on a private jet….
As usual everyone’s hospitality to myself and all my family and friends was out of this world…. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH GUYS…..

August message from Don... 'I Won't Be Playing Wonderwall Tonight'
Don with one foot in the North Sea and one foot in the Baltic Sea!
Don went to see the Skagen Folk Festival in Denmark in July... While he was there him and Hanne visted Grenen on the coast where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea. Hanne managed to caputure a pic of Don where his left leg is in the Baltic Sea while his right leg is in the North Sea!
At the folk festival Don bumped into Rab Noakes (Lindisfarne and Steeler's Wheel) - who regularly attends the Barnes lunches along with Don. Also he was pleased to meet Eleanor Shanley, who sings a beautiful version of Bob Dylan's 'Forever Young' from her CD 'Forever Young' (see pics below).
Also Don went to see his old mates The Sweet play the Varde Glam Night in Denmark on Thursday 25 July. Below is a pic that Don took of Sweet onstage - Don taking pics as a punter! Also there are pics with Don's good friend Bruce Bisland (Sweet drummer - who stood in for Don at some of the Slade gigs earlier in the year).

Don's 'Greatest Hits of All Time'
If Don had to choose 14 tracks to make up his favourite LP of all time - what would he choose?
Well here you go...
1) 'Think It Over’ by Buddy Holly.
The first song I ever learned to play drums to.
2) 'Peggy Sue’ by Buddy Holly.
Such original drumming byJerry Allison. When I learned this song I used to play the pattern on my front bass-drum skin.
3) 'Please Don’t Touch’ by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates
A total revelation to me. Great guitar playing by Mick Green.
4) ‘A Voice In The Wilderness’ by Cliff Richard & The Shadows. From the film ‘Expresso Bongo’
My first slow dance at my Youth Club and my first kiss (with my eyes open).
5) 'The Savage’ by The Shadows.
Great original drumming by Brian Bennett.
6) 'Picture of You’ by Joe Brown & The Bruvvers.
The first 'Package show' I saw in 1962.
Joe had the most fantastic red jacket on - it nearly blinded me.
7) 'Rock’N’Roll Music’ by the Beatles
From their album ‘Beatles For Sale’.
An incredible singing performance from John Lennon. The, whole track swings like crazy…
8) 'Whole Lotta Love’ by Led Zeppelin.
What a performance by all four members of the band…
9) 'Keep On Runnin’ by Spencer Davis Group.
We supported them at a tiny pub gig…
The first time I’d heard such a fantastic singer as Stevie Winwood and also his great guitar playing.
10) 'One Of These Nights’ by the, Eagles.
They supported Slade at the, Philadelphia Spectrum in, 1973,
I’ve been a fan ever since.
11) '‘Fooled Around And Fell In Love’ by Elvin Bishop Band.
Saw them at the Bottom Line in New York a tiny club. The perfect club band….
12) 'Something Else’ by Eddie Cochran.
One of the greatest rock performances on a record…
13) ‘Forever Young’ by Eleanor Shanley
From her CD ‘Forever Young’
Saw her in concert recently were she did an incredible version of this Bob Dylan song.
So emotional it made my wife cry…
14) 'Woman’ by John Lennon.
Reminds me of the day he was murdered (what an incredible waste).
What a voice singing his sentiments to Yoko….

Heartfelt message from Don
We received this message from Don today (Tuesday 9th July) that he has asked us to share:
"From the bottom of my heart. I really want to thank everyone who sent me ‘GET WELL’ messages while I was in hospital with my snapped tendon problem, and during my ongoing recovery period.
I had lots of chocolate sent to me - there was SO much! SO WONDERFUL! I even I had to give in and share it with the nurses who were looking after me…
At the moment, I’m doing a physiotherapy programme which I am pleased to report is working SO well. I’m in the gym every morning at 05:30 (I didn’t realise there was two 5 ‘o’clocks in a day…..) It's still gonna take time for my recovery - my physiotherapist has stressed to me, not to play drums too soon ‘cause if my tendons snap again, that will be the end of my career…. I know the Slade guys are in great hands with Alex stepping in on drums (Isn’t he the same height as ‘H’??!) SO people, hopefully I’ll see you before the end of the year (at the Slade convention in Wolverhampton for those of you who are going)…… ONCE AGAIN - MANY THANKS FOR YOU’RE GET WELL WISHES" Don…………… XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thanks For The Memory
Don reports that as he caught the bus into Silkeborg yesterday that as the bus doors opened the driver started singing 'Thanks For The Memory' to him... And he didn't charge him a fare! The advantages of being known to the Danish public..
Don introduces you to Dora...
Don wants to introduce you to his new boat called 'Dora' - named lovingly after his late Mum. Don upgraded his boat in October last year to a larger ten seater vessel. The boat needed some work doing on it - and Don has repainted parts and restored bits, like putting new carpet on the floor and some stainless steel railing on the bow of the boat etc...
The boat is moored on the Gudenå River close to Don's house in Silkeborg, Denmark. Fans have asked what Don's up to, while he is recovering from his accident in December last year? Well he spends a lot of his time on the boat - relaxing and travelling up and down Denmark's largest river looking at the beautiful local scenery.
Don said "Even before my accident it's always been nice to have a few hours going up and down the river looking at the lakes that come off it. I've always enjoyed it and found it relaxing - especially on days-off following shows.... as long as the river police aren't about".

'Universe' gets Silver Disc Award
Don has a huge array of Platinum, Gold and Silver discs at his home for sales of Slade records over the years.
With Don's travels, and changes of home over his career, Don has lost some of the original awards - but managed to get the discs replaced by the BPI.
A little known fact is that one of the awards that he has been able to receive is a Silver Disc for UK sales of 250,000 for the original Slade's last ever single 'Universe' in 1991. Although the single wasn't a hit in the UK when released, sales and downloads over subsequent years, along with inclusion on Greatest Hits albums, have allowed it now to qualify for Silver Disc status.

The photos of Don that we have all been wanting to see...
We are so pleased to share some photos that all Slade fans would want to see - Don back behind a drum kit!
Don yesterday (Wednesday 19th June) tried a few minutes on the drum kit that he has in the loft at his home in Silkeborg, Denmark... It's a small electronic practice kit and he did a very easy session... He was able to play the practice kit without using his legs (or damaged knees)... As mentioned in Don's video message yesterday (update on Don Powell's Occasional Flames - see a couple of stories below), Don doubts that he'll be able to use his legs for drumming for a little while yet (he's said he might not be able to drum at the Fan's Convention in Wolverhampton in October) as he has been advised by specialists to take things very slowly.... BUT it is great to see him back behind a kit again and bashing out some tunes with some sticks!

Barry Blue and the Barnes lunch...
Don attend the usual half yearly 'Scribs' lunch in Barnes on 12 June.
Organiser Lesley-Ann Jones arranged that Don stood and said a few words during the event....
Don wanted to thank all the attendees for their messages of support that they sent during December last year, when he had his accident at Peterborough Station.
Also at the event he bumped into popstar and song-writer Barry Blue ('Dancin' On A Saturday Night', 'Do You Wanna Dance', 'Hot Shot' etc)... Don hadn't seen him, since the 70's - but instantly recognised him. He told Barry how he also remembered him when he was called simply Barry Green - and was the office boy at Roger Stigwood's offices at 67-69 Brook Street, London - where Chas Chandler also worked from!

Don reminded of when he stopped a guy from getting mugged...
Out of the blue Don received an email to the website from Ian Marcus from Scotland this week - reminding him how he stopped Ian getting mugged at Euston station.
The email said: "You won’t know who I am or remember me, my name is Ian Marcus I am 61 years old & I live in Scotland, I was looking at a clip of Slade on YouTube tonight and It reminded me of a time in 1976 when I was a young 18 year old Sailor on my way home on leave to Scotland from HMS Diomede based in Chatham, Kent.
I was in the bar at Euston station, I was sitting at the Bar having a drink waiting for my train, it was late at night when this man came up and started talking to me he was chatting away and I just thought he was slightly drunk but being friendly, so when he went to the toilet you came up and spoke to me you said to me he is going to roll you and that I should come and sit with you till it was time to get my train, I didn’t know what (going to roll) you meant but you explained he was trying to feel for my wallet and that he was going to mug me I never even realised what he was doing, So I did move and I sat talking with you until it was time for my train which was around midnight, I never realised who you were at the time although I did realised when I was on the train going home.
I never got the chance to thank you for saving me from being mugged or something even worse that night so I would now like to say officially thank you very much for saving me from a nasty fate Don.
I am sorry it has taken 43 years to say this to you but I have just found your website, it has always been on my mind and I often tell people when we reminisce about the 70’s that Dow Powell of Slade saved me from being mugged.
The video I watched of Slade on YouTube just sparked that memory and I looked at wiki to see what you were doing now and I landed on your website and I found this email address so I can finally say thanks.
I hope this email finds you Don and you are well take care and thanks for all the great music you and Slade gave us and I will try and get your book it looks a great read many thanks.
Ian."
The email was passed on to Don and he responded:
"Wow Ian.
You know, you’ve actually ‘jogged’ my memory….
I do remember the incident. I could see what he was up to, he’d obviously done it before probably many times……
He was getting ready to try something, it was SO obvious to me Ian.
OK, I used to be a boy-scout so that was my good deed for that day 43 years ago.
You be safe mate.

Kaleidoscope announcement : 5 more Slade TOTPs perfomances found!
Don was pleased to hear the great announcement from Kaleidoscope yesterday that five more 'lost' Slade Top Of The Pops performances have been found.
Kaleidoscope are a non-profit making organisation that aims to recover (and restore) lost TV performances - including many from music shows like Top Of The Pops.
They have now announced that have found some computer tapes that were owned by Charles Pierce (now deceased) on which he recorded episodes of Top Of The Pops. Scores of performances have been found, but the Slade ones are:
4 November 1971 - Coz I Luv You - 400th Top Of The Pops show
17 Februay 1972 - Look Wot You Dun
23 November 1972 - Gudbuy T'Jane - (promo filmed at Greenwich Observatory)
17 October 1974 - Far Far Away
19 February 1976 - Let's Call It Quits
Don has said: "Wow. I remember all the studio performances. It would be great if the 'Look Wot You Dun' performance happened to be the promo filmed at Chessington Zoo - rather than the studio one. I remember so well the Chessington promo - I was filmed with a fish in my mouth (that was due to be fed to a sealion). I had to do several takes with the fish in my mouth - and it started to honk! It was a great day at the zoo - but freezing mind you!
I don't really remember the Greenwich Observatory film with 'Gudbuy T'Jane' - it'll be great to see it.
I do recall that the TOTP's people always insisted that bands did a studio appearance at least once before they would show a promo film in those days - unless the band was genuinely out of the country of course. It'll be great to see how many of these performances get found."

Update from Don
Pleased that Don has sent the website this following update:
"Just to let everyone know that I have spent the last couple of days with Lise (Lyng Falkenberg) putting together stories and info. As you know, Omnibus want to publish my biog in paperback and want an extra chapter / chapters... We have been going through some of my diaries (not featured before) AND we have been going over some stories to make it a bit more up to date.... Apparently Lise's deadline to get the work to the publishers is this Friday!
Also, to inform everyone I am now reaching the next stage of the recovery process after my accident in December. I can't believe it has taken so long, but my Consultant had warned me not to rush things as I might spoil the good work he's done. My legs feel so strong now - I have been working hard on my exercise bike. BUT now I have been told, that at last, I can push forward with physio, which starts this week - which is great news."

Slade and The Eagles together - finally confirmed!!
FINALLY!
Don is so grateful to Slade historian Chris Selby who has finally found confirmation that Slade and The Eagles did actually once gig together!
When trawling through some websites, Chris came across and advert for a gig at the Philadelphia Spectrum on 26 May 1973 - where the two bands shared the bill alongside Lou Reed. As all Slade fans probably know, The Eagles are Don's favourite band - he idolises them. He is really thankful that evidence has been found of their gig together - as Don has told stories for years that they had!

'Beginnings' - 50 years old!
Many thanks to the Slade Are For Life - Not Just For Christmas Facebook page (click here) for promoting the 50th Anniversary of the Ambrose Slade album 'Beginnings'.... Here's what Don had to say about the recording:
I still remember Phillips studios where we recorded ‘Beginnings’ (I believe Paul Weller bought it many years later). I remember turning up in our old battered Austin J2 (cost us £90:00 cash). We were all in awe of being in a ‘REAL’ studio - we walked rather sheepishly into the studio there was this bloke showing us where to put our equipment asking who was producing our session and what kind of special equipment we were needing for our session. In our innocence of youth we were a little in ‘awe’ of this blokes knowledge as he was showing us where to place our equipment giving us a history of the studio telling us about Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich and the Walker Brothers recording there.
He showed us where we could make tea and where we could go and buy sandwiches. We were thinking he must own the studio or might even be the engineer who was going to record us. Anyway, we started to set our gear up and this other bloke came into the studio and introduced himself as ‘Roger Wake’ the engineer for our session. He was a really nice guy who hadn’t a clue who we were or what we were supposed to be doing together with him. We said "Jack Baverstock (head of Phillips /Fontana Records) had invited us to do some recording there". We then thought was that Jack Baverstock who we met earlier? We later saw that guy who we were in ‘awe’ of sweeping up and moving furniture around…. He was just the caretaker!! We had many laughs about him for years later….
Roger started to get ‘sounds’ from the guitars and drums, I do remember NO DAMPERNING on the kit. Nod, ‘H’ and Jim played at a pretty loud volume. Nod sang at the same time…..We were playing songs from our stage show while Roger was starting to get sounds.
NOW, we hadn’t written any of our own songs then. We were just playing our stage set as it was then. We felt we had a really good relationship with Roger - we ‘bowed’ to his experience. He in turn listened to our ideas.
I can’t really remember what song we started to record first, we were just ‘whizzing’ through the stage set we had been playing for years.
Roger got our sound (of the time) really quickly ideas were bouncing of us all (Kid’s in a toy shop). I remember recording Jeff Lynne’s ‘Knocking Nails Into My House’ - when it came to that particular line we got blocks of wood from somewhere and were banging them together to re-create a sound of workmen ‘knocking nails ????
We decided to have a go at writing our own songs. Don’t know where this idea came from BUT we got Jim on violin. We stood round clapping our hands and stamping our feet doing a kind of ‘hoe-down’ style song. We called it ‘Chickens In The Hay’ just as Jack Baverstock came into the studio to have a listen. "Ha", he said to us, listening to our attempt at ‘hoe-down’. “ Are You Taking The Piss Out Of Me”? We all thought it was pretty good….I wonder what happened to that recording? I do remember “ Pity The Mother” being the first song Nod and Jim ever wrote together.
We recorded this instrumental (called it ‘Genesis’) on the album. It was just a jam in the studio, we had great fun putting all the sound effects on it (from the studios library). When we were introduced to Chas Chandler (during those sessions) he remembered ‘Genesis’ and said “ You should write lyrics to that” which I did…it became “Know Who You Are”.
What was to become “Beginnings” was actually recorded in five days…But remember that album was our stage show of the time (quite a diverse selection of songs really). I listened to it when I was asked to write this piece and was impressed how ‘tight’ we were as a band. The album cover is another story…"

'N Betweens contract from 1965 emerges
Many thanks to Jeremy King who has sent us a copy of an old 'N Betweens concert agreement that he has recently found.
The agreement was part of a lot of music memorabilia that he purchased. The gig the contract relates to was on 7th May 1965 at the Wednesbury Town Hall.
Webmaster has shown the document to Don who said "God - it's fantastic how these documents turn up... In the years following this I used to be the band member who used to sign and agree all our work agreements".

'Fake' Don still exists!
Many thanks to Gary Dear who messaged the website after a recent trip back to his family home in Poole...
Slade fans who attended the 'Crazee Nite Tour' in 1974 will remember there were life-size cardboard cut-outs of band that were on display in the entrance halls of the venues by the merchandise stall.
When the tour finished Chas gave the cut-outs to Disc magazine for fans to win in a competition. It was Gary Dear that won the cut-out of Don - and he still has it. On returning to the family home he found it stored in the loft! He wonders if any of the other Slade replicas are still in existence?

Get Well Soon messages to Don
Don has been really chuffed with all the messages of support he has received since his accident.
Brian May from Queen has sent Don several emails - and yesterday Don received a message from his all-time hero, Bobby Elliott from The Hollies...
He said:
Hi Don
Here we are in Holland. Your Tim is keeping us all shipshape and Bristol fashion.
I wanted to wish you a speedy recovery. I hope that you will soon be back in command and making em have it.

Don reviews 'Tumbling Dice' by Lesley-Ann Jones
Don has had some time on his hands recently - and he spent some of his time really enjoying his friend Lesley-Ann Jones' latest book 'Tumbling Dice'. Here's his review:
LAJ and myself first met at the legendary ‘Scribblers, Pluckers, Thumpers, Squawkers’ lunches held two or three times a year in London. I call the function ‘The Rock’n’Roll Masons’ do, and I’m not going to divulge the venue....
When LAJ asked me to read her book ‘Tumbling Dice’ and write a few words, I felt quite chuffed, I’ve only ever read two books straight off without putting them down, the first was ‘The Beatles' by Hunter Davies’ and the second was Lesley-Ann's book ‘Tumbling Dice’.
Also, I must say, the deciding factor on me reading it was, her Uncle Bryn used to play for Wolves - my home team!
After reading her book, I felt I knew personally all the people she was writing about.
‘Tumbling Dice’ is such a great eye opener for anyone who wants to read about the escapades of celebrities ???????. WITH NO SMUT!!!!!!
It was SO nice and fnny (sometimes) to read of LAJ's trysts with celebrities without being ‘sycophantic’ or ‘starstruck’.
I’m sure everyone who reads this book will love it just for that…… WELL DONE Gal. I could go on forever, decide for yourself!
PS LAJ - Reading about 1973 I don’t see that you had a SLADE LP (as they were then) in your collection!! Grrr.
But on a positive note did you really dance round your handbag to Slade??

Update on Don's health
Friday 26th April - Don has provided us with an update on his health that he would like to share with his fans:
"Well I'm pleased to report that I'm now walking without sticks and I've even returned to driving!
BUT I have been strictly warned at the moment not to play drums or go to the fitness centre. My knees are still swollen but I am having no pain.
It is a nice feeling not being restricted to the house though as I can get out and about now!
Hoping all the fans are doing well - and I look forward to catching you soon!
Love Don XXXX "

Photo emerges of Don in New Zealand - 1973
As fans are no doubt aware, there are very few photos available of Slade's 1973 tour of Australia and New Zealand.
We are delighted that photographer Lloyd Godman has contacted the website and allowed us to use this great action shot of Don on drums at the gig at Te Rapa Racecourse.
Many thanks Lloyd. Check out Lloyd's website of Slade pics here.

Don Powell DVD competition winner
The winner of Don's personal DVD competition is:
Geoff Lake from Meole Brace in Shrewsbury, UK - who email with the correct answer of Eastnor Castle
Please bear with us Geoff - we will get the DVD posted to you shortly!
In the meantime Don has emailed the website with this story about Eastnor Castle...
"Just to let you know I had a look at the Eastnor Castle web-site.
Apparently, there's only ever been two events held there - us filming the 'Run, Run Away' video and in the 1960's it being used for location for the filming of a movie with Sammy Davis Jnr, Jerry Lewis and Peter Lawford called 'One More Time'........
Some fans might remember that we were booked to play the end of filming party at Eastnor Castle..... Not knowing who it was for..... you can imagine our faces when we saw who we were playing for.
Anyway, during the evening, everyone kept on shouting for Sammy to get up and sing. Eventually, he relented, he came to the stage and said " I'll just use the drummer" (that'd be yours truly). I can't' remember what song it was BUT, there was a 'stop' in it. I actually knew the song and stopped accordingly. Sammy turned round to me in amazement and acknowledged me by putting his thumbs of both hands up to me.
Why wasn't there anyone there with a cine or still camera to record it??..... It turned out most of the film crew that was hired for that 'shoot' were actually also used for 'Slade In Flame' ".They reminded us during the, filming of our 'epic'

Slade Bravo Scrapbook
New from Rexpert Books from March 2019 - The Slade Bravo Scrapbook.
Bravo Magazine in Germany was a big supporter of Slade in the 1970's and 1980's. They featured the band most weeks. Bravo's London Office writer - Margot Rietti - became close to the band and would spread exclusive news in her articles.
Bravo also took pride in getting photos that other magazines couldn't. Their UK photographer was an eccentric guy called Wolgang 'Bubi' Helleman. Don remembers the photographer and his antics well:
"Bubi - I remember him well.... he was a nutcase!..... Back in the '70's he was the photographer for BRAVO - and a very good one. He became manager or editor there...
I remember back in 1972 he was commissioned to take photos of us with our parents at our family homes.

Don's book to be re-issued as a paperback
Omnibus Press want to republish Don's biography 'Look Wot I Dun' as a paperback!
The publishing company have asked Don and author Lise Lyng Falkenberg to write a new chapter - that will be added to the existing book - which will be republished as a paperback later this year.
Don has already had an initial meeting with Lise to discuss the re-issue of the book. Watch this space for more news.

Don checks out 10CC
Don reports on a trip that he made to see 10CC in concert:
"On 14th February 2019 Hanne and myself drove to Aarhus. We went straight to 10CC's hotel and met Paul Burgess (drummer).
From there we could actually 'walk' to their gig. We were made to feel SO very welcome by the rest of the band and crew and also their promoter 'Bent'.
Backstage I chatted to Graham Gouldman who also played bass in Ringo Starr's band when I joined them onstage. He said that he'll be doing more shows with Ringo this year.
I reminded the band about a gig in 1975, on tour in America.... Kiss were top of the bill, Slade were 2nd.... and 10CC opened the shows AND incredibly they were No,1 with 'I'm Not In Love' at the time!
As I was in a wheelchair 'Bent' made sure Hanne and myself got a really good place to watch the concert..
It was a GREAT SHOW - they played all their hits (you forget how many). We were invited backstage again after the, concert to eat and drink with them before they went to their hotel.
They were leaving for concerts in Sweden the next day".

Goodbye to Mal
We are sad to announce that after 13 years working with Don and Dave Hill that Mal Nulty has left Slade.
Don would personally like to thank Mal for his service in the band - and Don has appreciated all his hard work and effort over the years. More than anything Don has been grateful for Mal's humour and friendship on the road - and he will keep in contact and catch up with Mal in the future whenever he is in the Liverpool area...
Good luck Mal with everything you do in the future!
And a big hello to Russell Keefe who will replace Mal in the band. Don looks forward to working with him during 2019.

Ted McKenna RIP
Saturday 19th January 2019 - Don was saddened to hear of the passing of friend, and fellow drummer, Ted McKenna. Today he sent this message to the website:
"I've just heard very sad news about dear friend Ted McKenna’s death.
I first met Ted back in the 1960’s when he was playing in a little pop band called Bubbles who used to gig around the Glasgow area.
We struck up a great relationship back then when Ambrose Slade used to play Scotland, Bubbles were very often on the same bill as us..... A lot of people used to think Ted and myself were related ???? (check early photos).
The next I heard from Ted was when he’d joined the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. They were on the UK national tour with us in 1973..... I used to stand on the side of the stage with Ted every night before they went on..... We used to laugh together as they were ‘booed’ off every night (even in Glasgow, their home town).
Ted and myself used to joke also about the fact that he always loved to play with brand new shiny drumsticks
I hated playing with them (I used to roughen them u p with, sandpaper).... This was an ongoing joke we had for years..
Last time I saw dear Ted was when we did a show in Glasgow a few years ago. He went out of his way to drive to our hotel to have a cup of tea and a ‘chin-wag’.............. A, DEAR FRIEND, I WILL MISS YOUR WONDERFUL WARM FRIENDLINESS MATE. RIP."

Don in hospital - gigs cancelled
Friday 28th December - Don's wife Hanne has contacted Webmaster with some bad news.
"Don landed in England yesterday afternoon and went on the train towards Wakefield for today’s gig. When changing train both his legs collapsed (first the left leg and then the right leg). A bit later when he was trying to walk again to the platform and collapsed again. An ambulance was called and took him to hospital.
It appears that both his tendons have snapped. He was supposed to have surgery on both legs this morning, but because of an emergency situation the surgery has been postponed until tomorrow.
He can’t move his legs and especially his left leg which is very swollen around the knee and looks like a football, says Don."
Unfortunately the final two gigs of Slade's UK Christmas Tor have had to be cancelled (gigs are in Wakefield 28 December and Brighton 29 December). Ticket holders should contact the venue for refunds.
HERE'S WISHING A SPEEDY RECOVERY TO DON!
UPDATE ON DON - FRIDAY 28 DECEMBER 19.00
DON POWELL UPDATE. Webmaster has spoken to Don. He’s in good spirits and had friends with him in hospital at his bedside. He spoke as to how grateful he was to the ambulance crew who spent a long time with him at the train station where he had the accident. The surgeon has told Don the op looks definite for tomorrow - and family will be with him... Webmaster passed on good will messages from Jim and Frank Lea. Also Don has been told about all the Facebook messages from fans - and is grateful to everyone for their concern.

Review of Slade at The Robin, Bilston - 20 December 2018
by Richard Cox
The Black Country – a land of fiery furnaces turning out precision works of metallic art – and the home town of the biggest band of the early 70s: Slade.
The burning coals moved, shifted and throbbed under the roar of guitars and drums; the hands of the devoted waved like tall flames in the heat. This was Slade’s annual homecoming to Bilston.
From the molten bars rolling out Gudbuy T’ Jane through to the manic ferocity of Merry Xmas Everybody, Don Powell, Dave Hill, John Berry and Mal McNulty could do no wrong.
Take Me Back ‘Ome then the almost military precision beat of Look Wot You Dun – penned by drummer Don. The gig at the atmospheric Robin 2 quickly took on a life of its own with the wonderful and emotional lyrics of Everyday, with an anthemic chorus belted out by the closely packed, mass ranks of a rapt crowd, and then Coz I Luv You.
Run, Run Runaway galloped out of the paddock at pace; How Does I Feel gave full rein to the powerful vocals of bassist/violinist John Berry under drummer Don’s tight control; In For A Penny was almost Beatles-like with strong hints of Obladi and Maxwell’s Silver Hammer; My Friend Stan; then Far Far Away; and the American-style rocking blues beat of My Baby Left Me. Slade could have played ‘The Best of the Wombles’ (if there is such a thing) at this stage – the crowd were in collective love with ‘their’ boys.
Mama Weer All Crazee Now remains a practical demonstration of tight drumming, solid complementary bass and a soaring lead guitar from showman Dave Hill for the finale. Get Down and Get With It brought back personal memories of hordes of screaming teenage girls in Wolverhampton Civic Hall, circa 1973, and followed by Master of Ceremonies H conducting My Oh My and Come On Feel The Noize, before Merry Christmas Everybody brought the lights on and home time.
The Robin 2 Christmas gig is not for the faint-hearted, nor for anyone looking for pristine Slade of 40 years ago: it is for fans, who love fans, who love the shared adulation of the band for the fans. (PS. One gripe. I was ‘looking forward’ to a smelly, sticky carpet – and it’s NEW ... aaah.)

Shock! Horror! Don gets pulled by Police sniffer dogs!
Whilst in Oxford on Thursday 13 December, Don got stopped by police sniffer dogs who were trying to sniff out drug dealers.
Don says:
"The sniffer dogs were SO interested in me that I got pulled aside by the Police.
I said to them “ What’s all this”? And they responded after searching me: “It’s not drugs the dog can smell, it must be your money?"
I had to turn my pockets out AND I had just ONE POUND 50 PENCE in cash on me.....
I said “How long am I going down for”?????
They had a good laugh...."
Webmaster remembers the last time Don was stopped, when Police were looking for drugs, was on their autumn European tour in 1974.... Airport police stopped Don, stripped him and Don had "a torch put up his bum"!! At least they didn't go to this extreme in Oxford!

'Know Who You Are' lyric book
Don has a new book available!
In conjunction with Paul Cookson, Don has produced a lyric book of all the song lyrics that he wrote for Slade!
The booklet has all Don's lyrics in full - plus Don's thoughts on the songs and details of his thought process as he wrote the songs...
It's a collectors' piece - and includes a wonderful introduction from ex-Slade band mate Jim Lea - who describes how Don and him became 'paired' as early Slade songwriters...
The book costs just £ 5 and is available here. (It is hoped that copies will also be available for sale on the merchandise stall at Slade's Christmas UK tour).

Pies, Peas and Powell success
Don had a great afternoon at the latest Pies, Peas and Powell event organised by Paul Cookson at St Saviours Church in East Retford on Saturday 29 September.
The event kicked of with all attendees, and Don, having lunch of excellent locally produced pies and mushy peas in the Community Centre. Everyone was also given a pack of Slade related Christmas cards, a Slade related CD 'A Miz Spelt Youth' by Paul Cookson and Les Glover (which had six tracks including 'Coz We Luv You' and 'Don Powell - Drums'), and a Don Powell 'Pies & Peas' sicker.
The audience then moved into the church for the main event...
Don had a drum-kit set up and played a couple of numbers with the resident band consisting of Les Glover (vocals and guitar) and Graham Botley (violin). Paul Cookson then took to the stage and interviewed Don. There were questions from Paul, and questions from the audience - along with video screens whereby historic pictures of Don's past were displayed - whilst Don answered questions. Also there was a video link - whereby performers such as Mike Peters (The Alarm) asked questions about his favourite album (Slade Alive) to Don - and quizzed him about the song-writing credits on the album sleeve..
Paul also rattled off a list of the Slade hits - and Don would respond with snippets of information about how the songs came about - or how the were recorded... Details as to why Noddy Holder shouts "Baby, Baby, BABY" at the start of 'Cum On Feel The Noize' and why can be heard chuckling on 'Just Want A Little Bit', and saying 'Stop It' on 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now' were given...
During the Q&A Don stated that his favourite Slade song was 'Far Far Away' and his least favourites were 'Okey Cokey' and 'Cocky Rock Boys'. He admitted to liking 'Give Us A Goal' and said that the song that he would most like to re-record in hindsight would be 'How Does It Feel'. Don felt the drums could have been a bit more confident on the song....
Some photos were also shared on the video screens that were taken of Slade in June 1972 on a flight to Stockholm. The photos were taken by journalist Steve Turner - and were previously unseen... A photo was displayed of Don sitting next to his close friend (and tour manager) Swinn (RIP) - and Don said he would treasure the picture forever.

Don finished of the afternoon playing a couple more songs with Les and Graham before moving on to a video shoot for the Christmas single: 'It Really Isn't Christmas Until Noddy Sings'....
And there ended a great afternoon...
The only disappointment was that Paul Cookson was gutted that the promised book of Don's song lyrics was not available to hand out to attendees at the event. (The book was delayed at distributors in Europe - and was to be given free to attendees as part of their entrance fee). Paul explained that the book has all Don's song lyrics printed - with written explanation by Don of his thought process in writing the songs.... Attendees gladly wrote their addresses on envelopes and handed them in, so that the books can be posted to them as soon as they arrive from darkest Europe.

Haden Donovan RIP
Don was extremely sorry to hear of the passing of ex-Slade tour manager, roadie and friend Haden Donovan.
He said:
"What a lovely person, like that big soft Uncle everyone wished they had.
Haden was always there for you - SO trustworthy, always eager to help or support you in any way he could.
I only once ever saw him ‘riled’.
He very often would telephone you to see how you were, even though you maybe hadn’t spoke together for months when we weren’t on the road.
I’m gonna miss you mate, hope you're safe and at peace Haden. XXX"

'How Does It Feel' used on the big screen once more!
For the first time since 1975, Slade's classic track 'How Does It Feel' from 'Slade In Flame' can be heard on the big screen once again.
Keith English, Director of the new independent British movie 'The More You Ignore Me', decided to use the track in the opening scenes of his film - which features Sheridean Smith, Mark Addy and Jo Brand.
The film has been a labour of love for Debbie Gray of Genesius Pictures, Jo and Keith for about 5 years. They have finally got the project completed and being an independent film, they are spreading the word as far and wide to try and get people to see it. They are hopeful film goers and Slade fans alike will enjoy it.
The Film has gathered a lot of support - 4 star reviews include Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian. Importantly it is a film about mental health issues and the impact of family. It also includes music from The Smiths and Madness.
Keith said: "I grew up with Slade in the 1970's and ‘How Does it Feel’ is my favourite of all the (Slade) songs.
The story could easily be a companion piece to the ‘Slade in Flame’ as they both have as their theme the struggle to rise above the mundane and make one’s life something special. In the case SIF it's Don’s character reaching for stardom, in TMYIM it's the young Alice’s fight to be something more than the daughter of ‘a mental woman’."
'The More I See You' is showing at selected cinemas now - and if you plan to see it check out the film's website here. Viewing locations will be added all through August and September - so keep looking as a dates might be added at a location near you.

Even more of Brad Matisoff's Slade pics from 1970's Seattle
Many thanks to Brad Matisoff (again0 for sending us more of his pics from Slade in the 1970's Seattle.
Born To Be Wild...
Monday 16 July - Don sent webmaster the pic below with the following description:
"Hanne and myself took all the, kids and, grandkids to a ‘fun-fair’ for the day…..
Now, Andreas somehow got me to go on the ‘Juvelen’…… This is a line of cars that travel at 85 kilometres an hour….
As you can see by my white knuckles and closed eyes it was not the most enjoyable of ‘rides… for me….."

Don doesn't remember too much about playing in Seattle in the 1970's - except that Seattle was always a good gig for the band.

Photos from Slade in Seattle, May 1973, emerge...
Many many thanks to Brad Matisoff from Washington State, USA who has sent us these previously unseen photos that he took of Slade in May 1973 when they were in Seattle, USA.
Brad was a young photographer and took photos of the band performing at the Paramount Theatre (where they played on 11 May 1973). Also, there are pics of the band at KOL Radio Station (NOT KOR Radio!) in Seattle (note Noddy wearing an Archie & Jughead T-Shirt - in honour of Archie comics). Also, there is a pic of the boys having a laugh in their hotel room - which is the Edgewater Hotel in Seattle - it was the same hotel as the Beatles had stayed in and fished out of their hotel room 9 years previously (Google it)!
It is great that Brad has un-earthed these photos from the past that have never been seen before... He might have some more to follow....
(If you chose to share any of the pics PLEASE could you credit Brad Matisoff as the photographer).

Don meets Ringo Starr!!
On Friday Don managed to meet and play with his idol Ringo Starr in Denmark.
Here's what happened in Don's words:
Friday 15th June 2018
Ringo Starr gig in Horsens, Denmark
Hanne and myself drove to Horsens for the Ringo Starr Concert….
We parked up and made our way to the backstage area…. We have been told we were on the backstage list but had no idea how we were going to get in.......At the backstage entrance they had NO idea about our names on the guest list….
We went to the front entrance - the same there…. I thought "OH NO"… We left a few messages on mobile phones.
Apparently, text messages were flying around all over Europe and America ‘bout the, whereabouts of our passes.
We eventually made contact with Gregg Bissonette (Ringo’s other drummer) - he had all our passes. (PHEW). We went backstage and bumped into Graham Gouldman (10CC) he was playing bass for Ringo.
He told us that Ringo had said to him: “Slade’s drummer Don Powell is going to play with us tonight".
We met Jeff Chonis, Ringo’s drum tech, he told me to go easy on Ringo’s kit - which I would be using! Ringo then came up to me, holding a huge plate..... with a very small piece of cake on it for me!
We had a really lovely conversation about everything, especially in America. He reckoned, Slade came on too strong over there while, trying to ‘crack’ that country,
He’s such a lovely down to earth person. I told him about us recording “Delighted To See You” at Abbey Road Studios while he was there with The Beatles recording songs for ‘Sgt Pepper’. On the day, we were there, they were actually recording George Harrison's 'It’s Only A Northern Song’ which ended up on ‘Magical Mystery Tour’''
I told him about seeing, George Martin, (their producer) coming out of the control room, burying his head in his hands, giving out an enormous sigh….. Ringo confirmed: “he was always doing that”.
Anyway, there were about 4000+ people at the show. He had a great band….. Graham Gouldman from 10CC on bass, Colin Hay from Men At Work, on guitar and vocals. Steve Lukather, Toto, on guitar and vocals, Gregg Rolie, Santana, Keyboards and vocals. Warren Ham on Sax & flute - he played with Olivia Newton-John Newton, TOTO and Donna Summer. The there was Gregg Bissonette on Drums and he's played with Dave Lee Roth and Don Henley.
Ringo actually played with all the hits from his various performers with their respective bands.
Would you believe, I actually played Ringo’s drums for the final songs of their show. I played 'With A Little Help From My Friends' & 'Give Peace A Chance'.
What an absolute dream for me………………

Don's LA trip next year
Don advises that he's been invited to attend the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) festival next January in....... Los Angeles!
As a treat he's taking his step-son Andreas with him.
They will spend about eleven days in the States and Don is saying he may hire a car and drive the Pacific Highway to San Francisco!
Also he might take a look at some of the venues Slade played in the ‘70’s (if they’re still there)!
Finally - in other news Don's been invited to a Ringo Starr concert in June, AND he might get up and play with him…. WOW. Watch this space.

Welcome to Don and Hanne's new dog: Bodie / Bodil
!6th March 2018 - Don and Hanne have another canine addition to their family - Bodie
She's an English Bulldog . Her previous owner called her Bodil - but Don and Hanne have a neighbour (strangely) called the same name - so they changed it slightly to 'Bodie' (as in 'Bodie and Doyle' - The Professionals) - they wanted a name that was similar, so as not to confuse her!

DAY ONE - First pic is an 'N Betweens photo-card and Fan Club membership card.
Carole remembers from the period of the photo-card:
"When the boys dressed up in those hippy type clothes, us girls had flower-powery stuff too. We had tubs of bubbles and blew them around the dancefloor. If only they did the bubble machines, that they sell on the markets, back then!"
DAY TWO - In the summer of 1966 Don sent the postcard (below) to Carole - when the band were staying in Torquay. (Note : Don spent Carole's first name incorrectly!)

Carole said about the time the 'N Betweens were staying in Devon:
"Back in the day the only place you could get real clotted cream from was Cornwall.or Devon Those places would post it out as holiday souvenirs..... While Don was away he sent me some , sadly it was a bit rancid when it got to Wolvo!"

Announcement from Don
Friday 23 February 2018 - Don has sent the website a message that he would like to share with the fans....
"It’s finally happened…… After all the years of giving my ears an incredible volume bashing, my hearing has finally (almost) given up on me….
After many tests over the past few weeks, it’s now been decided - I have to wear a hearing aid in both ears….. (BUT not on stage. Not suitable…..)
BUT, I will say it’s a been a total revelation to me - after many years of diminishing hearing, I can now hear again !!!!!!!!
My hearing is now like the scene in “2001 A Space Odyssey” - when the astronaut is dressed all in white in that totally white room and every sound you hear is totally crystal clear……
I can hear clocks ticking.... and people can stay in the same room while I’m watching TV (not at stadium concert level) AND when people are talking about me………"

"I was sent an invitation by George Fredericks from Marshall Amplifiers and Natal Drums to attend The London Drum show at Olympia Arena in London on 12th November 12th 2017.
I saw lots of friends there I hadn’t seen for a long time. I was asked to get up and play a short drum solo. Mel Gaynor, drummer with Simple Minds asked me to teach him the drum intro to Gudbuy T'Jane!
It was a fantastic (noisy) day."

Review of Don's 'Pies, Peas and Powell' event in Retford on 24 October
I first knew I wanted to play drums when I was 12, one of rock music’s most enduring, loved, admired and gregarious stars told an enraptured audience in a towering church in deepest Nottinghamshire. Slade’s Don Powell was holding court in a wonderful Question & Answer session.
It was 58 years ago that Don picked up his drumsticks: an action that would lead him round the world again and again; to the top of the charts and back to the despair of loneliness, bankruptcy and alcoholism; as well as on the road entertaining and meeting thousands of fans.
This one-off ‘performance’ was not a heavily scripted, roadie-controlled, time-conscious gig; this was an extension to the chats that music fans can have with their heroes – if, in Don’s case, they are prepared to get up a stupid o’clock at a hotel when he’s touring, and join him for breakfast.
The venue was magnificent. St Saviour’s Church, East Retford, is no ancient pile of stones. It is a ‘celebratory church’; a venue that welcomes love and happiness in all its varied shapes and sizes. Just look at Don: a flowing-haired rockstar with the Cross of Jesus behind, and a list of the day’s hymns to his left (let’s all join in Hymn No 699!). The church and music have been inextricably linked almost since time began; there’s no reason to exclude rock music from the pantheon.
Why north Nottinghamshire, home to Robin Hood and Maid Marian? Because Paul Cookson, poet, embedded Slade aficionado, and our answer to Michael Parkinson (without Grace Jones or Rud Hull and Emu, thankfully) with his relaxed, knowledgeable and embracing style of MCing, lives in the vicinity. It was a superbly chosen venue, and it was great to see the Acting Vicar and various church staff tapping and clapping. I don’t want to put pressure on, but I do hope that Don and Paul put their heads together for a repeat performance somewhere.
No spoilers, just in case this chat between chums happens again, but one story has been told so frequently I think I can get away with it.
During Don’s declining days in alcohol abuse his ‘partner in crime’ was Ossy Osbourne. Their homes in London were close by and between them was a wine bar. At 10.30 every morning they’d meet and attack the optics with gusto. This went on for months. You could set your watch by the duo’s antics. One day Don was on his own. He checked his watch; no Ossy; he had a drink; no Ossy. He feared illness or worse. The bartender tapped him on the shoulder and stuck a thumb towards the door: there was Ossy looking like an accident, dressed in a beautiful designer dress.
“My wife hid all my clothes to stop me coming out. It didn’t work,” Black Sabbath’s star vocalist pronounced before the day’s drinking began again.
Don’s Q&A was lyrically orchestrated by Paul. From his early non-musical days in the heavy metal manufacturing town of Bilston, meeting up with Dave Hill, then Noddy Holder and Jim Lea, disaster and legal threats in Bermuda, the years of stardom, and the continuing joys of playing drums and travelling the world, this show covered ground effortlessly. There’ve been low spots in Don’s life, namely alcoholism (he’s not touch a drop for 30 years), the car crash where his girlfriend lost her life, and the break-up of the original band; there’ve been high spots, including the first Number One, the film Slade in Flame, festivals such as Bardney and Reading. Everything was covered, brutally and honestly.
We listened attentively; we heard Don play a borrowed kit; we applauded two local musicians who accompanied him on guitar, mandolin and violin on several Slade tracks; and the event raised hundreds for The Autism Society – Don’s chosen charity.
I only disagree with one thing the maestro said. ‘When did you realise you wanted to play drums?’ It wasn’t 58 years ago, Don: it’s every day when you wake up and you feel that itch to perform for us.
Anybody who can’t wait for the next one – and I hope there will be – will find most of the answers to their questions about Don in his exceptional autobiography Look Wot I Dun – My Life in Slade. It’s a revelation of a book.
Thank you Don Powell. Long may you tap those stretched skins and thanks to Pies, Peas and Performances who organised the event - they had great Pies and Peas!

Quatro, Scott & Powell (QSP) is a supergroup founded in the very heart of glam rock, bringing together the combined forces of three legends of rock ‘n’ roll with Suzi Quatro on vocals and bass guitar, Andy Scott of The Sweet on vocals and guitar and Don Powell from Slade on drums.
Warner Music Group Russia have acquired the rights for the first ever release of the QSP album in Europe in the following formats: 1CD, 2LP and digital download. The album will be available as a Deluxe Edition, featuring additional tracks which were not included on the original release, which was available only in Australia and Asia (ex-Japan). The CD and digital formats will be available on 27 October with the 2LP set following on 8 December.
“We all have similar backgrounds and come from the same ballpark where we learned our craft, to coin a phrase, 'on the road’!” said Andy Scott, adding: “Back then performing was the only way forward. We have huge respect for one another and approach our musicianship in the same way.”
Don Powell was similarly effusive, never in any doubt that QSP was a special project, right from the very first jam: "We share an era and still continue to work and perform separately in concerts all over the world. After many enjoyable late night discussions it felt like the right time for us to come together to pool our ideas. From the first drum beat, bass lick and guitar chord, we knew we had something special.”
“In the beginning it was fun returning to our roots by recording a few covers,” said Suzi Quatro. “But eventually we started to write original songs which gave the album substance. We have created something we are all very proud of – QSP."

Don thanks everyone for their birthday wishes!!

It was Don's 71st birthday on Sunday 10th September.
On the Saturday 9th September Don played a gig with Slade at the Classic Rock Festival at the Omnisport Hall in La Hulpe Belgium. At the end of gig old friends John-Louise and his wife Brigitte, wheeled on to the stage a massive cake made like a drum - and all the crowd sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Don….
However the next day Don was amazed with the hundreds of birthday messages he received on Facebook. He wants to thank everyone who sent a message - he read them all!
Don had a great time on the Rock Cruise!

Don had a great time on the Rock Cruise last week.
Slade joined the Magellan Cruise Ship on Saturday 2nd September in Newcastle - and set sail around the Scottish Coastline. Slade played two gigs onboard on Sunday 3rd September and Monday 4th September.
Below are some photos that Gwen Dale has kindly allowed to be shared on Don's website - followed by Don's Gig Report.

Board The Rock Cruise
I was awake at 04:15 (before my alarm 05:00).
Cleaned up and finished packing to meet Suzanne for breakfast.
Robin, John and Graham (our road manager) arrived so we could all drive to Newcastle Upon Tyne together so we could check into our cabins on the MAGELLAN ship - our home for the next four days!
Met Tom McGuiness from Manfred Mann (he is also a regular at our lunches in Barnes) and the Troggs.
Also it was great to find out that our old roadie, Will, and friend Janet were onboard! I spent a great deal of time reminiscing with them.
We all had to have a safety demonstration - in case of an emergency on board! And H can't swim!
I made my self-familiar with the boat (very big).
I watched a bit of the Troggs play.
Met an American couple, Eric and Tracey, who’d travelled all the way from New York to see us play! They were big fans from the ‘70’s…….
Also dear friends Glenn and Gwen were also on the trip….
I was in bed by 22:00.
Sunday 3rd September 2017
Gig on The Rock Cruise
I slept until 08:00.
Made tea and relaxed.
Went to a restaurant to have breakfast.
I then went to the gig to sort my drums out. The others turned up so we could do our soundcheck.
I went for lunch before watching, Manfred Mann. Rob Townsend was on drums for them, he used to play with the group ‘Family’ (he also goes to the Barnes lunches). Mike D’abo was singing (he replaced Paul Jones in the ‘60’s).
We left Newcastle to sail all round the Scottish Coast.
Manfred Mann went on before us.
We had a great full gig. Last time we played a similar boat trip from Sweden, it was a very bumpy trip AND I threw up all over my drums! Not a nice spectacle when I hit my drums - everything was sent ‘spraying’ into the air!….. Ha, should have got a photo!
I was in bed by midnight.
Monday 4th September 2017
Another gig on The Rock Cruise
I woke at 09:30.
Cleaned up and went for tea.
I then relaxed all day - talking to Eric and Tracey. They were telling about seeing us in the ‘70’s at the New York Academy of Music’ iand how there is now a museum there dedicated to the Woodstock festivalI the wandered round this very large ship singing the theme song from ‘Titanic’
Tonight, we went on before the Manfred’s…. Another great show.
I was in bed by 23:30

Pies, Peas and Don Powell
Don's doing an interesting event in October. It's called: 'Pies, Peas and Don Powell'
Details are:
Date: Tuesday 24 October
Location: St Saviour's Community Centre, East Retford, DN22 6QW
Times: 7.30pm-11pm
Price: £10 + £1 booking fee

An evening with Slade drummer and legend Don Powell. Rock and roll stories and much, much more.
Plus a chance for audience questions and the opportunity to get a signed copy of his book.
Hosted by Slade's Poet Laureate - Paul Cookson ( he may read at least one of his Slade poems - you have been warned).
Music by Les Glover
Host Paul Cookson says about the event:
"We've had a series of brilliant Saturday night events in Retford with Pies, Peas and Performances - mostly acoustic nights but a couple of literary, poetic events too.
So, you will all know how absolutely delighted and excited I am to be able to announce that the one and only DON POWELL has kindly agreed to come and be part of a very special evening for us.
We've fitted in with Don's travelling plans etc so it is a TUESDAY - TUESDAY 24TH OCTOBER - a bit short notice but you have to take these chances while you can!
The event will actually take place in the church building itself - where we have access to overhead screens for a/v purposes.
There will be no bar as such but please feel free to bring your own drinks of choice.
There WILL be pie and peas at half time.
It will be an evening of two halves, hosted by myself, asking Don a few questions about his book, Slade and beyond. The second half will have an opportunity for audience q&a.
We wil also have a little bit of Slade related music from our good friends Les Glover, aided by Graham John Bottley on the violin ( hmmm - wonder which song ... )
And - of course - there will be an opportunity to buy Don's book and have it signed as well.
There is a warning - I may read a Slade based poem or two and have a few books loitering around too ...
All for £10! What value !
So - that's it. Share it and spread the word. Find out where Retford is.
Buy your tickets from wegottickets.com
Hopefully see you all there.
Love
Paul "

Hanne's photos of Don with Robbie, Peter and Kasper Schmeichel
Many thanks to Don's wife Hanne for allowing us to publish her photos of Don backstage at Robbie Williams' gig in Denmark on Monday 7 August 2017. Don can be seen with Robbie, Peter Schmeichel (retired Manchester United goalkeeper) and Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City goalkeeper).
Don goes to see Robbie Williams in concert in Denmark... and meets a Slade fan called Peter Schmeichel

Don has sent the website the following gig report:
Monday 7th August 2017
Robbie Williams gig at the National Stadium in Copenhagen
Hanne, Marianne and myself got ready to go to the Robbie Williams concert at the National Stadium in Copenhagen.
When we got there, I gave Pete (Robbie’s Dad) a call. He came out to meet us with our passes etc, and to take us through to the backstage area.
When we got there, Robbie was doing a filmed interview BUT he stopped it and came over to welcome me with a big hug. I then told him to go back to work.
We (family and friends) were greeted SO warmly, everyone made us SO VERY welcome.
Just before it was time for Robbie and his band to go on stage they all got into a circle for their warm up ritual. Robbie insisted that I get in their circle and join in with them…….
47,000 people were there for the concert……
Well. What a fantastic show it was - Robbie and his Dad Pete dueted on Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’……. Peter Schmeichel played guitar on stage with the band for a couple of songs…… Peter Schmeichel was telling me backstage what a massive Slade fan he was in the ‘70’s……
We said our goodbyes to them as they went on stage - as afterwards Robbie and the band would drive straight to the airport to fly to Finland…..
What a fantastic show AND how warm and welcoming they all were to all of my family and friends…..

Don's car negotiator...
Don sent the website a report of him buying a new car:
"Hanne and myself were going to look for a new car…. (our existing one has finally died on us, the radio is worth more than the car).
Anyway, Hanne’s mother Lis wanted to come with us. We went a,showroom we found on the internet that had what we wanted.
NOW, Hanne’s Mom told us that she wanted to do all the talking.
Hanne and myself had a test drive in a couple of motors and decided on the one we thought best for us, the family and Ozzy.
Hanne’s Mom then spent the next thirty minutes negotiating with the salesman AND got this incredible deal on our old car AND the one we were going to buy.
The salesman finally said to Hanne’s Mom…..“ Let’s get this deal signed before you take the watch off my wrist.” Haha!

RIP Roger Allen
Monday 24th July 2017 - Don was saddened to hear today of the passing of Roger Allen - who for a short time managed The 'N Betweens in the 1960's and arranged for them to get their first ever record deal with Jack Baverstock's Fontana label - with which the band recorded the 'Beginnings' album.
Don said about Roger:
"I wanted to write a few words for Dear Roger - he was a sort of manager to the ‘N’ Betweens back in the ‘60’s.
He was a larger than life character - full of energy, always out for a laugh and a good time….
He used to run gigs at a few of the pubs and hotels in and around Wolverhampton. We played all of them for him - many, many, times…
I haven’t seen him for many years now - with the last time being about 20 years ago. I was in Wolverhampton. I kept seeing this white limousine driving around town. I thought to myself: “ I wonder who that is”?
THEN - I saw this car park up by one of the Wolverhampton pubs... And who gets out? ROGER!…. I was laughing to myself as I went up to him saying: “ You haven’t changed, have you” ?
We had a great laugh about our early days together….
My thoughts go out to his son Guy and ex-wife Sue….
RIP Roger….."

Don contributes to article about Tittenhurst Park
Don contributed to an article about John Lennon's old home Tittenhurst Park.... Tittenhurst Park was owned by Lennon in the late 1960's and then sold to Ringo Starr - who renamed the in-house recording studio the 'Starling Studio'... Slade spent a couple of days there in the late 1970's and recorded two songs: 'I'm Mad' (used on the 'Return To Base' album and 'I Can't See Nobody' (Bee Gees cover - unreleased).

Hanne and Don decided to take their new puppy ‘Ozzy’ out on the lake in their boat to see if he would be nervous or not… (Rocky used to be).
As Don and Hanne were out in the lake would you believe it, a Police Patrol boat stopped to see what they were up to!….. Don was trying very hard not to laugh..

Don at John Pidgeon memorial service in London - 20 June 2017
20th June 2017 - Don is in London today attending the memorial service for friend John Pidgeon who died last year.
John will be known within the Slade circle as the author of the 'Flame' novel in 1975 (which was based on the original screenplay by Andrew Birkin - but was more 'gritty' ).. The book sold 150,000 copies.
Additionally John is also known for being a film and music journalist, a radio producer and a one time road manager of the rock band The Faces.
John was the organiser of the 'Scribblers, Pluckers, Thumpers and Squarkers' lunches in Barnes that Don often attends, along with Noddy Holder and Dave Hill. To read John's obituary from last year click here.
Don's write up regarding attending John's Memorial Service follows:
Tuesday June 20th 2017
I was up at 04:45 ?????????
Cleaned up and made my way to the, West-End.
The McDonalds was open on Tottenham Court Rd - I relaxed there with some tea….. It was amazing how many people I passed ‘dossing’ in doorways around there - BUT they all had mobile phones OR Ipads. Mmmmmm.
I then made my way to RADA on Chenies St - bumping into my old dear friend Bob Young - who was ‘Quo’s tour manager back in the ‘70’s when Slade and Quo toured together a lot.
We walked to John Pidgeon’s memorial service. Many of the Barnes lunch goers were also there (but not Nod ???). Bob, Ed Bicknell and myself sat together for the ‘cabaret show’ for dear John.
Barry Cryer talked and was very funny. There were lots of people I didn’t know there. Paul Merton was there only as a guest…
The last thing at the service was, Tom McGuiness (ex-Manfred Mann & McGuiness- Flint) singing McGuiness-Flint’s big hit” When I’m Dead And Gone”. Quite SAD - but it was a lovely ‘send off' for dear John.
After the Memorial Service, Ed Bicknell, Bob Young, myself and Sandi (who used to be married to Ian Mclagan, keyboard player from The Faces) all went to a have a pizza.
Bob and myself were telling, Ed and Sandi about Slade and Quo's touring days together - especially having Police escorts during internal flights on our Australian tour together in 1973 - along with food fights, stripping off and walking round the plane - mind you the other passengers loved it!!!!!
We said our cheerios saying ‘See you all next week for the Barnes Lunch'…..

Richard Cox reviews the QSP CD

Website reader and old Slade mucker Richard Cox (also know as Tony R Cox - crime fiction writer / freelance writer) has provided this review of the debut QSP CD.
Forwards to the great rock n’ roll of yesteryear
For lovers of rock music, in its raw, throaty and earthquake-inducing prime, the new album by three true exponents of the art is a revelation. QSP will excite, rumble and erupt long-thought-dead emotions of past memories.
The personnel are a remarkable combination. Suzi Quatro is a figurehead for female rock music, but she’s so much more. Her vocal and bass drive is infectious and consuming. Andy Scott is a revelation. I never realised how steeped and clinically exact he is as a professional music man: his Sweet days are a long way away and this new, never heard before Andy Scott strides Collosus-like.
Don Powell, is and has been since the 60s, a force of power and admiration in drumming circles. When I first met him in December 1970, just before Slade went stratospheric, he said that he was getting a bigger, better and louder drum kit. He did, and he’s still thundering out a magnificent controlling beat. QSP is a change in direction, but Don is a musicians’ musician and he adapts his style to suit.
This trio relies on each other individually and stylistically, and the result is a great album.
Slow Down: First track and straight into Jerry Lee Lewis-style 50s RnR. Sax and keyboards drive it forward, with Don powering away.
Long Way From Home: Andy Scott and Suzi wrote this and their vocals are top drawer. Simple cadence can be a little metronomic, but the poignancy of the title is given full rein. Over the six minutes there is a crescendo building to allow Scott’s guitar full rein, before the rhythm kicks back in.
Tobacco Road: Make that geetar wail Andy, and thump out the power beat, Don. Suzi and Andy will grab the well-known lyrics by the throat and sing out loud. Suzi’s bass takes control on a well-disciplined track. Jez Davies, guesting on keyboards again, is a joy.
If Only: Don crashes the intro; Andy picks up the lead; and Suzi’s voice soars over them. Another Quatro track and, as is natural, her bass takes a central role, but behind her Don keeps it tight ‘as a drum’ and Andy drives the melody along. Another poignant collection of lyrics from Suzi, which her strong, distinctive voice communicates, despite the drive of guitar and drums.
Bright Lights, Big City: Don Powell in complete control: he takes up the melody from the start and Suzi thumps that bass line in a gut-wrenching, joyous and solid four-bar, while she and Andy can be ‘seen’ smiling through the lyrics. They know they’ve got something special here.
Pain: ‘Power up the Quattro’ was DCI Gene Hunt’s catch phrase in Ashes to Ashes. This 80s-style orchestral track is penned by Suzi Quatro and Andy Scott has all the atmosphere of those dramatic times. She pleads and she fights and you just know she’s going overcome this particular emotional pain. Strings arranged by Mike Batt ... now there’s a pleasant surprise.
Just Like A Woman: Many have tried to get Bob Dylan’s emotions across; QSP have managed it. Suzi’s voice captures every nuance, and roars over the drive of Don and Andy. If you’re going to sing a song by a master lyricist and poet, you’d better be good. Suzi Quatro is that good: Dylan will appreciate this treatment.
Mend A Broken Heart: Andy Scott in 4/4 jazz mood with a dated vocal style that suits the discipline of Don’s drumming and Suzi’s bass. For once Suzi’s vocals take a back seat, but they’re still exactly what’s need to emphasis Andy’s clarity. Keyboards and sax could be late night jazz session, but with this power there’s no nightclub sleaze.
The Price Of Love: I’m not sure the Everley Brothers intended this to be such a rocker, but there’s no argument with three musicians at the top of their game. The vocals are great, but just behind them Don’s drums hammer out a solid foundation to keep everything on track.
Broken Pieces Suite: Is that St Winifred’s Choir I hear? No, it’s a great, self-penned vehicle for Suzi’s story-telling vocals combining a gentle rhythm with absolute clarity, before Andy and Don crash in and drive it into a fighting-talk rocker. It’s almost operatic.
I Walk On Gilded Splinters: Don Powell is a world class drummer, and that’s a fact. Intermittent guitar strokes give way to dual vocals – almost a duel – and then an echoing guitar riff, while the drum beat never falters. A galloping drum riff brings in Andy’s wailing guitar and Suzi’s bass keeps it solid. There’s a hint of a rocking Tubular Bells in the background.
Late Nights, Early Flights: The two guitarists, Suzi and Andy, are back at it. They’ve written a driving rock ‘n roller that has a very heavy, drum-bass rhythm and the lyrics are all about what they know best – the time-defying world of being global rock stars.
Little Sister: Pop music with a Suzi Quatro voice. She takes this great little track in her beautifully manipulative hands and fashions a vehicle for everything that’s good about her voice and bass guitar. Oh yes, Suzi owns this number.
Pain (the band): Suzi winds up the album with some powerful, crying and demonstrably constructive vocals. No orchestra with strings: this is measured, emotional rock. Yes Suzi, “we’ve all gotta feel pain sometimes”, but not when you’re singing back by two great musicians.#
In the early 70s I nailed my colours to the mast of Slade and for a while they were the biggest band in the world. The also-rans of Sweet and Mud, and, to an extent, Marc Bolan, were just that. Wind forward 44 years and Sweet’s Andy Scott is a stand-out musical star. He’s a guitarist, a vocalist, a song-writer and he deserves some big bouquets for producing this remarkable album.

RIP Chuck Berry
Really - what superlatives can you impose on a man who basically started the 'Rock'N' Roll' guitar. The 'Chuck Berry' chord as everyone calls it was a revelation to any would be guitarist.... "He Wrote The Book".... I think, every guitarist from all over the world learned to play a Chuck Berry song before anything....... I also think practically every band on this planet has played, or recorded, a Chuck Berry song....
From the Beatles to the Rolling Stones to Elvis to the Carpenters..... Just listen to his lyrics.....remember that his songs go back to the '50's, I've never heard lyrics SO poignant and SO modern. HOW DID HE COME UP WITH THEM??????
CHUCK IN THE REAL SENSE is one of the, if not THE, greatest Rock'n' Roll song writers EVER..... He will live on forever through his songs.
God rest in peace dear Chuck.....

Don in a book about Ringo's Tittenhurst Park / Starling Studios
Don recently carried out an interview with author Scott Cardinal who is writing a three volume book about the architecture, grounds and gardens of Tittenhurst Park.... Tittenhurst Park was once owned by Beatle John Lennon - and was the location of the Starling Recording Studios, where he recorded many of his classics.
Don talked about how Slade manager Chas Chandler was keen for them to experience recording in a different location. In 1979 Tittenhurst Park had been given to Ringo Starr by John Lennon - as he had moved to New York. Chas Chandler had Slade recorded the track 'I'm Mad' there from the 'Return to Base' LP - plus several other covers, that were never released, including a cover of 'I Can't See Nobody' by the Bee Gees.

Bibble Brick book copy emerges
Many thanks to Claire Gibbons who surprised Don with a photo of his 'The (wonderful) Adventures of Bibble Brick' book from the 1970's. Claire has a draft copy - as the book was never actually published.
Fans might remember that the book was serialised in the Slade Fan Club newsletters in the 1970's. The first serialisation was published in the July/August/September newsletter of 1976 - and two further serialisations appeared until the Fan Club closed in March 1977.
Recently Don has admitted to thinking again about what to do with his Bibble Brick book as he still has a full copy of the manuscript...
In the meantime Claire plans to have her copy of the book read out in class at the primary school she teaches at in the West Midlands.

A day on the tour bus with QSP - by Malcolm Skellington
Malcolm Skellington joined QSP on the tour bus from Townsville to Cairns on Thursday 2nd March - and wrote this report:
A day on the tour bus with QSP, well at least SP...
When travelling Suzi likes to do her own thing as her husband Rainer Hass has joined her for the tour - so I`m sure they have a lot to catch up on (so they were not on the bus)

Don likes to sit beside the driver, shotgun as he calls it, it is the best seat on the bus too!
Arthur the tour manager gets some sleep on a bunk after a busy gig in Townsville.
Suzi`s band and crew share a laugh around the big table at the rear of the bus. I sit in the forward area and watch Andy Scott do just about every crossword in today’s papers.
The road is long and straight with not much other than sugar cane fields and gum trees to look at. I can hear the coach driver pointing out anything of interest to Don.
Andy gives up on the crosswords, kicks off his shoes, relaxes and waits for a snooze to come on. It's gone quiet at the back, conversation expired after a month on the road.
I spot a bunch Kangeroos grazing on a piece of pasture. I Can see the cloud covered mountains of north Queensland in the distance. The Sky getting greyer, maybe we`re catching up with some rain - it's still 32*C outside.
Passing through the town of Ingham on the A1, notice they still have Woolworths in Australia! Road sign says 263 Km to Cairns as we pass the first hour on the road!
It starts raining, tropical storm even, then finishes very quickly! Lots of road works, hard hats with high viz sunshades attached.
Wild black turkeys dashing over the road. Another downpour, dark clouds and cars with lights on.
Don playing a card game on his iPad, he loses. Just passing through Cardwell on Sea, can`t see the sea.
Alan the coach driver has arranged a stop for beverages and sandwiches at Tully station.
Tully station is home to INGAN Tours, an Indigenous tourism operator that also specialises in selling aboriginal work. It is run by two lovely ladies Sonya and Sharon.

More sugar cane fields and a few banana plantations thrown in. Driver giving Don a talk on the history of sugar cane plantations in Oz - all good info.
Still thundering down the A1, Bruces Highway - we are passing Sheppard Creek.

QSP album charts in Australia
Don received the good news during his plane journey to Australia that the QSP album has charted in Australia, after just a few days sales and little promotion - as the band have not yet arrived in Australia.
The album debuts at No51 this week - with hopeful progression when the QSP tour commences on 3rd February.
Don touches down in Brisbane at 6.40am local time on Sunday 29 January - after a gruelling 20 hours flying time and a 1 hour 40 minute stop-over in Dubai. At least he had the benefit of travelling Business Class!

Don's first email update as he boards the plane to Dubai...
Don has taken his ipad to Australia to give the website updates on how his tour with QSP progresses.
He has sent his first email update as he was about to board the flight... And it''s not good news for Andy Scott.
"Hi - It's Don here. Andy Scott and myself checked in for our flight to Dubai (and then on to Brisbane). Andy had to pay £1,500:00 excess baggage 'cause of his guitar equipment!
My bag was perfectly on weight, thanks to my wife Hanne - who spent ages moving things around between my two suitcases I was allowed.
We'll be boarding our first flight of the trip to Dubai anytime now...... I will keep you all posted."

Signed QSP CD competition...
Be one of the first people in the UK and Europe to hear the new QSP CD on Sony Records.
Before Don Powell and Andy Scott left Heathrow on Friday 27th January (to join Suzi Quatro in Australia) they both signed a copy of the CD.
Don would like a reader of his webpage to win it. He didn't want to make the competition too hard - so his question is:
Quatro, Scott and Powell all had No1 singles in the UK with their relevant band's. Name the FIRST No1 single that each of those band's had.
The competition has a short expiry date as we want to post the CD out to the winner as soon as possible. So the expiry date is Midnight on Monday 30th January. (Correct entrants will be put into a hat - and a winner picked at random). Email your answer to donpowellofficial@sky.com along with your name and address.(The CD will be posted to the winner on Tuesday 31st January).
