Don skin problem update...
Don has provided an update on his skin condition:
"I’ve had extensive tests on my skin etc., NOW I’ve found out that I am allergic to the sun's UV rays…..
SO, no more sunbathing. If I’m in the sun, I have to keep covered up. (Really, I should keep out of it. BUT now I have special clothing to block the UV Rays). And I have to wear a hat!!!!!!!!!!
Also if I feel a reaction coming on ‘cause of the sun, I have special creams to use and tablets to take.
AND I’M OFF TO AUSTRALIA IN A FEW WEEKS…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

RIP Rick

This is for dear Rick………
I first met Rick in 1972 when Slade and Quo toured England together….we have remained great friends ever since.
We also had a fantastic tour of Australia in 1973 - us and Quo nearly getting kicked off many internal flights and having Police escorts all the time. The police were there because of our ‘childish’ behaviour!
We also did shows in America with them. Always a fantastic time with those guys.
I can honestly say of all the bands we’ve met over the years, Quo are the only band we can actually call ‘mates’.
Sometimes, we don’t see them for ages, BUT when we do……. It’s like we’ve never been apart.
I remember that me and Rick attended a Bucks Fizz concert together (both being big fans), but we promised each other we wouldn’t tell anyone in case we lost our ‘credibility’ !
Take care mate wherever you are !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don's travel memories
Don had a terrible car journey travelling from Cambridge down to Brighton for the last gig of Slade's UK tour. Don's journey was hit by long traffic jams in Cambridge, and on the M11 and M25.
It was being stuck in the traffic that reminded Don of an incident that happened around 1968 when Slade were travelling on a new section of the M6 that had been opened - and were stuck in gridlocked traffic... As the band's van edged forward they noticed that a family car was parked up on the hard shoulder - and the family that were in it were sitting on the grass in the central reservation, on a blanket, having a picnic. Don couldn't believe what he was seeing! The memory of it and the laughter it caused sticks in his mind to this day.
On another occasion in the 1980's Don was travelling in his car and heard Noddy Holder being interviewed on a phone-in show - that he thinks was for Capital Radio in London. Don stopped his car, and rang the show. He explained to the producer who he was, and asked if he could play a prank on Nod. The producer agreed and put his call through to the studio. Don put on a funny voice and said "I'm a big Slade fan, but why when you perform do you always stand right in the middle of the stage so the audience can't see Don Powell?"
Nod responding apologising saying "I don't do it on purpose!" before hearing Don's laughter on the other end of the phone and realising he'd been pranked!

Don revisits a location from the 'Flame' movie...
...The Grand Hotel in Brighton
On Thursday 22 December Slade played a gig at Concorde 2 in Brighton and the band chose to stay at The Grand Hotel.
Avid Slade fans will recall that The Grand Hotel was used in the final sequences of the movie 'Slade In Flame'. Don was pleased to revisit the impressive hotel. He recalls that the band were allowed to film their movie scenes there for free - on the understanding that the hotel frontage be shown, displaying the name 'The Grand'.
Don revisited the sites of some of classic scenes:
The Spin Doors - where Slade roadies Charlie and Robbie had to push their way through (with the band) and a handful of teenage girls into the foyer.... (and where one teenage girl didn't manage to enter, but came spinning out).
The Hotel Reception - Where the band and fans were seen arriving at the hotel
The Lift (now refurbished) - Where Noddy Holder and Jim Lea filmed the classic piece with an old lady standing between them looking them up and down...

After reliving old memories, Don stopped in the hotel for Afternoon Tea... As you can see from the photo below, Don got his full money's worth of tea - after paying for this expensive treat...
Also, after the tea was finished, Don was caught out trying to take home something 'a little extra'... Haha.
Don reunites with 1984 Ludwig drummer in Cambridge
At the recent Slade gig at The Junction, Cambridge (21 December), Don was reunited with pal John Shearer.
In 1984 John was a drummer with the band Hurricane. He used to play Ludwig drums and was one of the 74 drummers that the Ludwig company arranged to fly to Chicago to spend a weekend together. Don refers to this weekend as 'The Lost Weekend' (due to a memory blackout because of the amount of alcohol consumed!)
Don and John became pals on the weekend long drinking session and last year John contacted Don by email - and showed him a copy of the poster that Ludwig took of all the drummers together.
(In the poster John can be seen to the left of Don).
The guys were gladly reunited for the first time since 1984 when John went backstage at the Slade gig in Cambridge. John confirmed that for the photoshoot that they were actually holding each other up to stay in shot of the camera!

Don offers a healing hand...
Don was sorry to hear that Slade fan Bernard from Munich had been suffering with a troublesome ankle in 2016. The ankle had broken three times during the year and had caused him a lot of grief.
Bernard had still travelled to the UK to attend Slade's Christmas gigs and after the Cambridge concert (Tuesday 21 December) Don offered to use his 'healing hands' to give Bernard's ankle a rub and hope that it is now finally on the mend!

RIP Roger Wake
Saturday 3 December 2016 - Don was saddened to hear of the passing of Roger Wake. He said:
"Roger Wake who engineered the ’Beginnings’ died today.
I have to say, he was SO patient with us newcomers to the recording studio….. He taught us SO much and was very integral to the way Slade learned how to record and how to adapt to working in the, recording studio as opposed to playing live on stage…..
We owe Roger a great deal…. A lovely warm and patient man.
All my sincere thoughts go out to his family. Roger, you will always be in my heart….

Happy 50th Anniversary 'You Better Run' by The 'N Betweens
Don has emailed to remind us that it is the 50th anniversary of The 'N Betweens first single 'You Better Run'.
He wrote:
"50 years ago. 2nd December 1966.
’You Better Run’ was released… On Columbia Records. Record No, DB8080
We did a record signing at ‘Cliff & Halifax’ record store in Wolverhampton. I was the only one there for ages. Nod. Jim & H were SO late.
We were No1 in the Wolverhampton charts for six weeks keeping ‘Green, Green Grass of Home’ by Tom Jones of the No1 slot. Ha! "

Don reviews Jim Lea's 'Therapy' reissue
In September Don's ex-Slade band mate Jim Lea re-issued his 'Therapy' album with three bonus tracks.
We thought that it would be interesting for Don to review the album from his perspective... Here are Don's thoughts - he promised to give his honest opinions.
" Hi People,
Before I review Jim Lea's ‘Therapy’ CD... You all must remember, Jim and myself have been members of that ‘animal’ SLADE since its formation in 1966.
I have the utmost respect for Jim as a musician and writer. BUT, I'm going to be open and frank (not Lea) with my thoughts. I’m going to treat this review as if Jim was a complete stranger so I don’t get biased.
Obviously, in some ways my thoughts will reflect on our wonderful history together….
HOPE YOU ALL UNDERSTAND THIS." Don

Track 1 - Heaven Can Wait (For Those Who Pray)
Nice song….. Jim’s singing is really good.
Great arrangement and orchestration.
My only criticism, It’s too long and gets a bit lost.
Track 2 - Big Family
A very catchy song....
Personally I find the production just a little over the top.
Track 3 - The Smile of Elvis
Great song…… This is more like it for me.
Great orchestration and arrangement.
Track 4 - Deadrock UK
Great ideas and production.
Track 5 - Could God Be A Woman
Great intro…. But !!! ’Cheap Rap’
Great backing track with orchestration….. Great melody.
AFTER THE RAP……
Track 6 - Go Out In Style
YES…… This is great !!!!! Great drumming….
Track 7 - Universe
I’m too close to this song, I’m afraid…Bigger orchestration than Slade's version….But I think It’s actually a better version than Slade's.
Also, great vocal from Jim, better than Nod's on the original version me thinks….
Track 8 - Time And Emotion
GOOD….. Like the song and band performance…..
Track 9 - Your Cine World
Not sure ’bout the lyrics…….
Not my cup of tea. Sorry.
Track 10 - Valley Of The Kings
Ordinary song, sorry again.
Track 11 - Why Is Youth Always Wasted On The Young?
Not for me. Sorry again, again.
Track 12 - Notice
Rap again…. Sorry, again, again, again.
Track 13 - Let Me Be Your Therapy
Like it. Personal lyrics Jim?
Bonus Track 1 - 21st Century Thing
Nice - Who's it about Jim?
Bonus Track 2 - Thank God It's Friday
Yup….. More like it…. Good one
Bonus Track 3 - Am I The Greatest Now
I like the guitar intro…….. Great song.
Great vocal Jim….
In general, Jim has done a fantastic production job. But in my eyes (ears) it just gets a little too complicated for me. I like recordings more simple, just drums, bass, piano maybe and one guitar and vocal on top.

Don signs the big black book...
Don was pleased to sign the Big Black Book backstage before the Slade gig at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday 29 October.
The Apex venue has collected autographs from all the celebs who have performed on their stage during 2016... and they plan to auction the book at the end of the year in support of the Magic Moments Charity (which helps children in hospices get to visit Disneyland Paris)...
Previous signatories in the book included Joan Collins, 10CC, Mari Wilson, Lulu and comedian Rob Beckett (who advised that Lulu had left a floater)!

Don in the Wolverhampton Express & Star on Monday
Don was in the UK during the weekend of 29th/30th October to play a gig at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds.
Over the weekend he spoke to the Express & Star a couple of times about the QSP project. The interview should be printed in Monday's issue (31st October).

Not the best of venues...
Don has just found a photo on his phone that he took at a gig a little while back (we think it was at Lohusalu jn Estonia in August). It makes him chuckle - because as you can see it was probably not the best of arenas....
Mind you - Don said that lots of these beers were sold, so the audience didn't mind....
Don talks exclusively to the website about QSP
With the recent announcement of the QSP (Quatro, Scott & Powell) project of an album and Australian Tour – we thought we’d ask Don some questions about the arrangement…
Q: What are your first memories of meeting / knowing Suzi Quatro?
DP: I first met Suzi in 1972. Mickie Most had just brought her over from Detroit to produce her records, He approached Chas to see if she could guest on our UK tour that year. That’s when we first met.
Q: What are your first memories of meeting / knowing Andy Scott?
DP: Would you believe, I first met Andy in the Bahamas in 1968. His group “The Elastic Band” were also playing there at a club called The Jokers Wild. And at least they were getting paid….. Then obviously at TOTPs many times during the ’70’s when he was with The Sweet.
Q: So QSP. How did the project come about – who asked if you would like to take part?
Q: Slade, Sweet and Suzi were all playing together at a huge concert in Germany about two years ago. We were all sitting having a drink together after the concert and getting on SO well when Rainer, the really big German promoter (now Suzi’s husband), put the idea to us to make an album together…… There you go.
Q: Who decided on the name – were there other suggestions?
DP: One name that was put forward was “Power Of Three”…. BUT we thought why not use our own name initials QSP.
Q: Who will be managing the band?
DP: We will make the majority of the decisions BUT Suzi’s husband Rainer will help a lot…
Q: Was the initial part of the project to record an album – and then the tour followed on?
DP: It was just to do some recording together at first, it went SO well, we decided to make an album in our own right. Then it was Rainer’s idea for us to tour as opening act to Suzi on her Australian tour next February….
Q: Tell me about the recording of the album? Who wrote the tracks? How and when was it recorded?
DP: There are a lot of covers on there. Also songs that Suzi and Andy have written. We then rehearsed and recorded the album at a fantastic studio near Bath called “Real World”. You live, eat and record there. It’s owned by Peter Gabriel…..(he’s very tall).
Q: How did you three get on as a unit? Did you use any other musicians in the recording process?
DP: We get on great together, that’s why we decided to record together. We used girl backing vocalists, keyboard player and a sax player…..
Q: What can you tell me about the finished project? Have you decided on the final track listing and title?
DP: It’s all finished and mixed, we recorded in the, old fashioned way of, all being in the, studio together and playing together…..The track order is now decided (but could change) - QSP is the album title.
Q: What’s your favourite track?
DP: WELL at the moment it’s a track called “Bright Lights, Big City' BUT that could change……
Q: Is this the first time you have recorded with a female singer (or did you record with Sue ‘I Want To Be A Hustler’ Wilkinson)?
DP: YES it’s the first time recording with a female singer…..I didn’t record 'You Gotta Be A Hustler' with Sue Wilkinson - I only helped her promote it on “ TOTP'S.
Q: There have been some nice press pictures issued – who took them?
DP: Our old friend Gered Mankowitz - he took all the early Slade photos, all the early Slade album covers, he did the same for Suzi and Sweet. He was our first choice, he came out of retirement to work with us….
Q: You have been signed by Sony Records for Australia / New Zealand and the Far East. Are there any plans at all for a European / UK release of the album?
DP: I suppose we’ll have to see how things go first.
Q: Do you think a single will be released?
DP: Same again, we’ll see how things go first….
Q: So with the exciting tour of Australia you will be doing 18 gigs in just over four weeks. How do you feel about being in Oz for so long? And how does Hanne feel about you being away for so long?
DP: Last time in Oz I was there touring for eight weeks! Hanne and myself have such a fantastic relationship - those eight weeks will go SO quickly…
Q: Rehearsals for the tour… Will you be rehearsing together in the UK for the tour? Or will you fly to Oz early and rehearse there?
A: We are rehearsing this week (starting tomorrow 12 October) AND for a few days in Australia before the tour starts….
Q: Which gig are you most excited about playing? Must be the Sydney Opera House? Have you ever visited the place before on trips to Australia?
DP: Well most of the places we’ll be visiting, I’ve never been before. BUT Sydney Opera House on Valentine’s day will be a Goodie……
Q: The QSP set will be an opener for Suzi’s second half show. Any ideas how long you will play for?
DP: We’ll be playing for about 30+ minutes….
Q: In your downtime in Oz are there any things you intend to do / places you intend to visit?
DP: Let’s wait and see, I’ve already seen nearly everywhere in Australia…. Ayers Rock would be great to see……
Q: Has Dave Hill been supportive with your decision to dedicate time to QSP? Will you be returning to play with Slade when the venture is over in March?
DP: Dave Hill and myself have always supported each other….OF COURSE I’ll be back with Slade after the QSP tour….
Q: How would you like to do UK / European gigs with QSP?
DP: I suppose some selective UK/European shows will be imminent….
Q: Good luck. Are you excited to be doing something completely different?
DP: Thanks - It’s gonna be VERY exciting.
Q: What are your first memories of meeting / knowing Suzi Quatro?

Oz is in for a treat - QSP

Slade gig contract from 1978 emerges
Many thanks to Chris Selby for sending the website copies of a gig contract from an historic Slade concert in Great Yarmouth that was booked for 27 August in 1978...
It makes interesting reading, particularly the rider on the third page - which details the alcohol and food that needed to be provided in the dressing room!

Your 70th Birthday messages to Don
Have a wonderful birthday Don. We met when you were just 24.
Who’d have thought that 46 years later you’d not only still be playing drums with a great band, but would be an inspiration to young (and middle-aged and getting older) people all over the world. 70, for those of us who’ve lived through those heady years, is a remarkable achievement.
Happy Birthday to a good, honest and wonderful guy – and one of the best drummers ever. Richard (ex-Derby Telegraph!)
Dear Don - Wishing you a very Happy Birthday filled with love, laughter and happy memories. Theresa X

Don's 70th Birthday plans..

Don spent the day in Cambridgeshire, UK on Thursday 1st September catching up with old friend Will Wright.
Will is a good friend of Don who worked for Slade as Don's drum roadie in the late 1970's and early 1980's... Will lives in Cambridgeshire, so Don met up with him at his local pub - the White Swan in Conington - catching up on stories from the past... These included Slade's notorious tour of Poland in July & August 1978... Will recounted how Slade were one of the first Western bands to tour the country - and were only allowed into the country on a 'Cultural Exchange' on the basis that the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra toured the UK and in return the UK sent Slade to 'culturally educate' Poland! (More stories to follow - this website hopes to interview Will Wright soon).
Don spent the day in the UK before flying to Leipzig that evening in preparation for Slade's gig in Kelbra, Germany on Friday 2 September...
Don mentioned that his wife Hanne is driving to the Slade gig the following night in Oldenburg (Saturday 3 September) - before them both driving to the UK to start Don's 70th birthday celebrations... (Don will be 70 on 10th September).
Don will travel to Wolverhampton to spend his birthday having a meal with all his UK family. He and Hanne will then travel to Wales to spend a few days with his brother Derek and wife Chris, before driving home.

Thanks to Michael Vanoverstraeten for sending the above pic of the poster advising Slade's impending gig in Weymouth.
Topless pic of Don emerges from the 1960's...
Thanks to Don's nephew Ian Powell for sharing with us this picture of Don and H from his family archives...
Don has seen the pic and is almost certain that it is from Torquay when the 'N Betweens used to play there in the 1960's at the 400 Club.

RIP John Pidgeon
Don was saddened to hear of the passing of the journalist, author and rock historian John Pidgeon on Tuesday 19 July.
Slade fans will remember John for writing the book 'Flame' in 1974. The book was based on Andrew Birkin's screenplay to Slade's 'Flame' movie and was gritty and highly readable. It sold 150,000 copies on Panther Books in 1975.
In recent times John was responsible for organising the half yearly 'Scribblers, Pluckers, Thumpers and Squawkers' lunches in Barnes - which Don and other members of Slade attend.
Don remembers him as a 'lovely, kind man' and saw him last at the June Barnes luncheon which he and Noddy Holder attended.

Hilda's grandson gets in touch...
Don wass thrilled to receive the newspaper cutting (see left) from the 8 November 1974 issue of the Kent Messenger newspaper.
Jason Clarke sent Don the cutting. It relates to his late Grandmother Hilda, who was chosen to play in the train scene in 'Flame' with Don. Hilda said "what a nice chap" Don was. Don recalls that in that scene, when he says the immortal words: "Going For A Piss”, that the look on her face was genuine. (Richard Loncraine, the Director, decided to keep the unplanned 'look' in the movie). Don added that Hilda hadn’t really looked at the script to the movie... She hadn't needed to, not having anything to say anyway.... |

Don has a chapter in Keith Moon biography...

Don is pleased to advise that his thoughts on the late Who drummer, Keith Moon, are featured in a new biography called: 'A Tribute To Keith Moon (There Is No Substitute)' by Ian Snowball.
Don actually has in own chapter where he writes his remembrances of Keith and his drumming style.

Skin complaint update
Don gives an update on his ongoing skin complaint:
"Well, after fifteen years, my skin problem has been solved...
Would you believe the problem has been caused by sun creams - that contain certain chemical ingerients. I’ve now got a list of which ones I can, and can’t, use.
Also I’ve got information cards from the hospital. So when I need a prescription I refer to the cards, which list exactly what I’m allergic to, so I don’t take any medicines that contain anything I am allergic to...
I suppose you could say that during my drinking days, my excessive amount of alcohol intake ‘KILLED’ anything that was in my system.............. Ha.
However, I feel SO elated as to the results I’ve just had - I now know exactly what's going on."

An old college mate gets in touch...
The good thing about Don having a website is that it sometimes prompts old friends, who Don has not heard from in years, to get in touch.
One of those friends is Bruce Newman, who Don was pleased to hear from this week:
Hi Don,
Just read your autobiography and was interested to read about your time at Wednesbury Tech. Not sure if you remember much about them days.... we sat together all the time you were there and constantly discussed our future careers as 'draughtsmen'!!. We corresponded for some time after leaving Wednesbury and wrote about interviews and prospective jobs. I managed to get a Draughtsmans job at a Great Barr Contract Office and after many moves over the years remained in "Drafting" until I was 66, and finally decided "I had had enough"!
When I was courting (my now wife) we used to visit many music venues (mainly pub folk nights) and bumped into Noddy on numerous occasions. I always hoped you would turn up with him one of those nights so we could reminise why you never made it as a "Dratter !!!".
I remember the trips to the Swimming Baths up the road from the Tech. You used to dive in at one end and not surface till the far end !!. I was very jealous, as my doctor advised me to keep out of the water due to the perforated ear I was born with. Also i remember the PE teacher who took us for Football. I remember turning up at tech one day and you never turned up, and never returned..... I thought it was something i had said ha ha. Next time i saw you you was on 'Top Of The Pops' !! I nearly fell off my chair. Well done mate (better than being a "Dratter").
I now live in Willenhall (4 Sons & 10 Noisy Grandchildren). My mobile is XXXXX if you ever fancied a chat.
Best Wishes
Bruce Newman

Electric Guitars
24 April 2016 - Don went to see the Electric Guitars band last weekend. He has sent the attached photo. He says the guy on his right (as you look at the picture) is Soren Anderson - who has recorded and toured with Glenn Hughes, a big mate from Wolverhampton, who was in Trapeze and Deep Purple...... He says you can find them both performing together on ‘You Tube’.
Don really enjoyed their show.

Slade -50th Anniversary gig - Copenhagen, Denmark - 1 April 2016
Slade's 50th anniversary gigs: 1 April - Copenhagen, 2 April - Oslo
Slade: Happy 50th Anniversary
Although not technically correct, 1st April 1966 has always been regarded as the date when the original Slade (Don, Dave, Jim and Noddy) first got together as a band.
That makes 1st April 2016 as the band's 50th anniversary!
Don and Dave play a concert with Mal and John tonight at Amager Bio, Øresundsvej 6, 2300 Amagerbro in Copenhagen to celebrate.
CONGRATULATIONS FOR 50 YEARS OF SLADE!

drumBEAT 2016 details - Don will be attending...

rumBEAT UK 2016 had been confirmed!
It will be held as part of The Drum Show on Sunday the 18th September 2016 at Stadium MK, Milton Keynes. This is a major new drum show organised by Torn and Frayed (who run the very popular ‘Guitar Show’ amongst others...) This show will also incorporate the National Drum Fair – which moves from its previous location in Birmingham. With drumBEAT as the finale for a huge weekend of drums we are sure this will be an awesome event and hopefully fans can get involved in some way to help support the Brain Tumour Charity.
drumBEAT is In memory of Kate Fenney, co founder of The Music Shipping Company (wife of ex Slade II member, and close friend of Don's, Craig Fenney) and also to mark the deaths of Eleri McBay (wife of Kip McBay Guitar Guitar founder) and Jon Brookes (Charlatans drummer).
Marshall Amplification, Natal Drums and The Music Shipping Company have organised the event to bring together 1001 drummers to play the same drum pattern simultaneously, on full drum kits, at Stadium MK, Milton Keynes. The aim is to beat the current Guinness world record of 798 drummers and raise a huge amount of money for the Brain Tumour Charity.

Don's (early) birthday present
Don is pleased to share some photos of himself and his (early) Birthday Present from his wife Hanne.....
A boat!
He's been out in it everyday. And he's thinking of getting a ‘MEGA’ speaker to mount on the front like in the film 'Apocalypse Now' so he can go charging up and down the lakes, causing havoc!.....

Slade's Warner Bros promo man from NYC gets back in touch...
Don was pleased to receive a message out-of-blue from David Morrell in the USA.
David was a Slade fan - who then picked up a job as the Warner Bros promo man in New York City, and effectively then worked with Slade... (Slade signed with Warner Bros Records in the USA between 1974-1976. They released the following singles with them: 'Good Time Gals', 'When The Lights Are Out', 'How Does It Feel' and 'Nobody's Fool').
Photos were taken at the Academy of Music gig in New York City on 20 April 1973 (when Slade played with Black Oak Arkansas).
David said: "Those were the greatest of times…SLADE blew the roof off the Acadamy of Music on 14th street…..back in 1973…..
I got passes since I worked in the warehouse of Warner, Elektra, Atlantic records…I loaded record albums and 8 tracks….I only asked for the passes so I could see SLADE….not Black Oak….
Slade had made their dent with immediate #1's in the UK and since we got the English Mags….we saw something COOL was happening….THEN WE HEARD THE NOISE!!!!!!!!…..and it was WONDERFUL….
I took my camera and instead of saying hello to Black Oak…i went DIRECTLY to meet SLADE!!!!!
I went on to become a "REAL" promotion man the following year!"

Don's tribute to George Martin

Legendary Beatles producer George Martin passed away on 8th March. Here's Don's tribute to him:
"What a man....... What a sad loss.....
I’ve had the pleasure to meet George Martin on several occasions AND what a gentleman he was.
He was always called 'The 5th Beatle'. HOW RIGHTLY SO....
I’m sure, as many people would agree, that without him at the recording studio ‘steering wheel’ their phenomena definitely would not have been the same.
I’ll always remember the first time I saw him...... Slade were doing a recording audition at EMI studios in Abbey Road........ The Beatles happened to be in the next studio. I remember being in the corridor when he walked out of the control room. He let out an enormous sigh and put his head in his hands, almost going to his knees...... That picture has stayed with me since that day......
A VERY, VERY, sad loss. RIP great man....."
