Don and the Hieronymus Bosch drum skin

The good thing about Don having a website is that friends and colleagues from the past have a means of getting in touch with him...
It was only this week that Don received an email from Diane Price - who emailed Don to mention about the drum skin that her husband, Barry Price, painted for Don in the 1960's. Her husband had mentioned the drum skin to her - and she wondered if Don had any pictures of it.
Don had commissioned Barry to paint the skin based on an art work called The Vision of Trondel by Hieronymus Bosch - and early Dutch painter. Don thought that he had paid £4 or £5 to Barry for doing the job - but Barry remembers that Don coughed up £25!
Don recalls that he was really pleased with the piece of work, and that he received lots of comments about it at the time. However, despite him using the skin on a Top Of The Pops performance ('Shape of Things To Come'), like so many things from that period, he can't remember what actually happened to the skin after that!
Anyway we are pleased to track down and print a black & white and colour picture of Don using the said 'Hieronoymus Bosch' skin on the Top of The Pops performance. Thanks to Chris Selby / David Graham / Slade In England for their help.

Don gets naked... in the name of research
Readers of this website will know that Don has been attending a specialist dermatology hospital - to help with his skin problems.
The hospital asked if Don would take part in two lectures today (Tuesday 16 February) about his skin problems... His back was heavily scrutinised by about ten students from each of the two classes... Don thinks he had them befuddled!
Don said: "It was funny though. Me standing almost naked for one class, then walking through the hospital corridors to the other class...
Should have been filmed."

RIP Glenn Fry of The Eagles

Don was saddened to hear of the passing of Glenn Fry on 18th January.
Glenn was the songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, pianist and keyboard player with The Eagles.
Don said about Glenn:
I first met Glenn Frey during Slade's second American tour, around May/June
1973. The venue was the Spectrum Arena, Philadelphia.......
Slade were top of the bill. 2nd on the bill were a new band called The Eagles, 3rd were Steely Dan and opening the show was Lou Reed.
I remember standing on the side of the stage watching this unknown band the Eagles, thinking: "Sh+t, we've got to follow these".....
Couldn't help noticing what a great guitarist and what a great voice Glenn had (he was lead vocals on many of the early Eagles records). Also, he was such a lovely man also, as I found out later backstage.
I'll always put Glenn Frey and Don Henley easily on a par with Lennon & McCartney as songwriters............
Be at peace Glenn.

Wilds Winds Are Blowing video emerges...
After being 'lost' for years a promo video recorded in 1969 to promote Slade's 'Wild Winds Are Blowing' has emerged on YouTube.
Don has been asked about the video and he has no recollection of it being filmed whatsoever, and can't even identify what studio was used... (although it was the Phillips Stanhope Studios in London).

Don starts treatment for his skin complaint...
Last year Don fell ill to a skin complaint and was hospitalised.
Don is now doing well, but has just started undergoing treatment for the problem. He is confident with the treatment he is receiving and will be sharing some of the detail in his 2016 diary.

RIP David Bowie

Monday 11th January 2016.
Don was shocked and saddened to hear the passing of David Bowie. Today he said about the man:
"I saw Bowie on stage twice, once at Wolverhampton Civic Hall when he had
the 'Spiders From Mars' tour. What an incredible show man. I'll always remember one spectacular bit during that show. He was standing on a riser stage left. The lights suddenly went out and more or less came straight back on - and there he was on a riser stage right.
It was SO quick, I thought , it can't possibly be him, BUT it was..... STILL DON'T KNOW, HOW HE DID IT.....
The second time I saw him was at Earls Court in the mid '70's........ What a fantastic show, amazing sound and lights...... Very hard to follow that production.....
Never got to meet him. But just to say that one of the first records I bought was 'Space Oddity'......
VERY SAD. Be at peace mate. Don XXX"

Don to attend Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts

Don has had the pleasure to be invited to attend Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts on Friday 29th January.
He will be travelling with his son Andreas - and will be carrying out a question and answer session at the institute.
Don is certain that lots of old faces from the past will be attending and will make sure that he gets some photos, and some good diary pages, from the event.

Remembering Swinn...
At this week's Robin gig in Bilston Don's brother Derek remembered Swinn... He said: "Don and Swinn were always best mates. As a teenager Swinn came with my family on holiday to Weymouth - that was the last time we went away as a family together... After that Don always went away with just Swinn..."
Swinn's wife Debbie has kindly given Don Swinn's watch - which he now wears all the time... Also, Don was complaining that he needed to buy a new set of clogs, as his pair had a hole in... Clogs are very difficult to buy at this time of year - so Don now wears Swinn's pair that were virtually new - that Debbie also gave to him.

Can't Tame A Hurricane
Unfortunately due to the storm created by Hurricane Desmond, Don's afternoon flight from Birmingham to Dublin (on Saturday 5th December) has been cancelled. Don has been put up in a hotel in Birmingham overnight - but the replacement flight to Dublin is not scheduled til late in the afternoon of Sunday 6th December.
Due to time constraints, the book signing at Hodges Figgis in Dawson Street, Dublin tomorrow (6 December) has had to be cancelled. Don apologises to all who intended going - but he just can't get to Dublin in time...

RIP Graham Swinnerton - 'Swinn'
So sorry to hear the news that ex-Slade Tour Manager, Graham 'Swinn' Swinnerton, passed away on Monday 30 November after a long fight with cancer.
He had first worked as a roadie for The Vendors - when Don and Dave Hill were members of the band ... He continued working as the group transformed into Slade, and stayed with them as Tour Manager until the 1980's.
Don has written a few words about losing his pal:
Swinn and myself have been best of buddies since we were 11 years old.
We went all through school together, and when we were there our big thing was always getting each other in trouble.
When we were made school captains, we couldn’t understand it at all. On our last day of school we asked our headmaster Mr Daley: "WHY" ??????
His answer: "You two are the biggest rogues in the school, AND you know where any undoings would be happening. If I made you School Captains I knew you would use your new found power to ‘shop’ anyone".... And we thought we we have been given the position because we were something special !......
We have remained buddies for 58 years........ Sometimes never seeing each other for months, BUT that friendship has never diminished... I’M GONNA MISS YOU MATE......
God bless. You’re out of your suffering now. Be at peace.

Photos emerge from Slade's German tour 1977
Very little information or photos exist relating to Slade's German Tour in May 1977. The band shared the bill as part of a package with Pussycat and The Rubettes. The tour was sponsored by Music Joker...
Now some photos of one of the German gigs have emerged via Gerard Goyer. Gerard was sent the pictures by a German friend many years ago - and can't remember his name. He is unsure which gig they were taken at - maybe one of our readers might be able to shine some light on the unusual looking venue the band performed in?...
In the meantime, enjoy the pics that Gerard has allowed us to share.
UPDATE: 4 JANUARY 2016 - Rudolf Schubert has been in touch regarding the mystery of the photos. He has confirmed the pics were taken at Slade's gig at Frankfurt on 15th May 1977 - by himself. He has kindly allowed us to continue to use them. Thank you Rudolf.

Slade and a free British Caledonian flight...

Most fans will remember the iconic photos that were published of Slade leaving Gatwick in April 1973 - for their second American Tour.
The pics clearly showed Don and the boys boarding a British Caledonian jet - and chatting to the tartan clad air hostesses...
Don has revealed a story behind the flight. Was it by chance the Gatwick photos were taken? No - a deal had been done by Chas Chandler... The deal was that Chas and Slade would travel First Class, expenses paid, to New York... Just a long as they had the photos taken to help promote British Caledonian who had recently opened the route.
Chas was never one to miss a financial opportunity. (Read more about Slade's trip to the USA on the Slade Story blog spot - click here).

Don and The Rockitmen

Local band, The Rockitmen, supported Slade at their gig at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings last Saturday (14th November).
Two of the band recalled having previous experience of working with Don...
Keyboard player Rick Pentecost performed on the same bill as Slade at the Wolverhampton Fiesta (on 31 May 1981) and Rick Nesbitt is an electirician by trade and carried out some work for Don on his previous home in Bexhill.
It was great for Don to catch up with the lads - who were all pleased to share the stage with Slade as they are all fans.

Sold out show in Hastings
Despite torrential rain, and a horrendous car journey from Wolverhampton for Don and Dave Hill, Slade put on a great show in front of a sell out crowd at the Hastings White Rock theatre yesterday (14th November).
Don has stayed in Birmingham and Wolverhampton over the last week and has managed to catch up with a poorly friend. He is now staying just outside London and will be attending the 'Rock Star's and Scribblers' lunch in Barnes on Monday 15 November.

Don joins Dave Hill at the Music's Live event at PMT Birmingham
On Saturday 7 November Slade played at Butlins in Skegness. On the Sunday Dave Hill drove back to the Midlands and gave Don a lift. Don decided to pop in to the Music's Live event at PMT music warehouse in Birmingham, where Dave was due to make a personal appearance.
The event was packed with musicians listening to and watching demonstrations of all the instruments and equipment that PMT sell. Don browsed around all the drum sets and said that if he was visiting PMT as a young drummer he wouldn't know where to start nowadays - the is so much choice of sets compared to when he first started...

Don also took part in a charity event to find the fastest drummer..... Competitors had to hit a drum kit to find the drummer who could hit the most beats in 60 seconds... Don managed 654. This was a good figure - but not the best on the day... However, in striking those beats Don definitely won the prize for the biggest number of beats with the most panache.

Don's Diary Update - Don's hospital visit...
Sunday 4th October 2015
As we were about to leave for home from concerts in Norway and I really didn’t feel too good. People were commenting on my unusual ‘red’ colour. I also had an unusual sweat on.....
When I did get home, Hanne could see I wasn’t good. I went to bed with a shivering sweat. Hanne said we would have to go and see a doctor in the morning.
Monday 5th October 2015
I got up 07:00am, still not feeling good.
We got ready to go to see Eva, our doctor (GP). She arranged an emergency consultation with the skin specialist -who straight away made me rush to a special skin related problem ward at the hospital in Aarhus.
I was immediately admitted, and straight away sent to have special chemical baths. I was put on a course of drugs and my whole body, face and hair was covered in different medical creams.
Lots of blood tests were done and samples of skin were taken from different parts of me for analysis.
That went on everyday for a week.
I’m now back home and have just finished a massive course of pills. I’m still having to cover the whole of my body everyday with different creams (now I know what a ‘French Fry’ (chip) feels like).
I have to go back to the hospital tomorrow (Tuesday 20th October) to be signed off. And when my system is clear of all the drugs, THEN they will start extensive tests to find out what it is I’m actually allergic to.... BUT, at the moment I feel really good and have agreed to play the two concerts in Norway this weekend.
I must apologise for cancelling the shows in Gt Yarmouth, Minehead and Finland over the past few weeks. BUT, I was strongly advised by the medics looking after me, not to go ahead with them ‘cause of the strain that would be put on my heart.
I would love to thank everyone for your wonderful messages on ‘Facebook’ etc.... ALSO for the many, many boxes of chocolates sent to me in hospital. (I’ve eaten the lot and shared them with no-one).
LOVE TO YOU ALL. Don XXXXXXX

Don update...
Hanne reports that Don's skin complaint is the same as which he suffered with some 16 years ago - when he was hospitalised while on holiday in Spain. (Maybe the complaint might have been triggered again by the heat on Don's recent holiday in Crete?).
However, Don's Doctors are happy with the way he is responding to treatment - but will be keeping him in over this weekend.
Also, Hanne says that (as expected) Don is being spoilt by the nurses - who are bringing him extra desserts and cakes!
When Don gets better the website will interview Don about his delicate skin. Earlier this year when Don attended the fan convention in Bilston, he forgot to bring his shaving foam and shampoo from Denmark. Webmaster had to hunt high and low to find totally unscented shaving foam and shampoo for him - as if toiletries contain any form of perfume then Don's skin reacts to them....

Message from Don:
"I thought I would share my birthday photos with the website.
The main photos show my birthday cake. The 'man' cake is a children's tradition in Denmark. The birthday boy decorates the cake with sweets that they like, THEN before the cake is shared it out, the birthday boy has to cut the head off (sounds a bit gruesome to me).... Hanne made me the 'man' cake which was a lovely thick
cream layer cake...... I would like to thank everyone for all their presents, cards, e-mails and messages on Facebook......
Also, on the day of my birthday I also heard from Hanne's family who live in Oklahoma & Iowa in the United States... They said that American radio played some Slade records to wish me Happy Birthday...... WOW.!!!!!!!!!! "

Richard Cox reviews the Wolverhampton Racetrack Gig
Slade played an excellent gig at Wolverhampton Racetrack on Saturday 5 September.
Richard Cox was in attendance. Richard was a reporter for the Derby Telegraph - and was the first ever reporter outside of Wolverhampton to champion Slade... It was some 42 years after he had last seen Slade - and here is his report on the gig...

Take Me Bak with Slade after all those years
It started with a kiss – a kiss of rhythm guitar from Mal McNulty, a soft undercurrent of venom from John Berry’s bass, and then a rumble of drums and a crash of lead guitar. The scene was set for yet another ‘welcome home’ gig for Slade, just 42 years since the last one I’d been to.
The two new members had settled well, as you’d expect from talented and experienced musicians who’d worked with some of the great Glam Rock bands of that era, but this was Slade: the rambunctious, powerful, driving, soaring and dipping sounds of some of the great anthems of rock and roll from the early 70s into the 80s. What’s changed in those 40+ years? Not as much as many people think, but musically much more than I’d expected.
Dave Hill, who was always a star of instinctive lead guitar, has matured, but retained his showman appeal. His cheeky grin, foot-stomping and clambering over speakers belies what we have always known – he is a commensurate musician. His lead guitar reaches pinnacles of tone and texture that prog-rock lovers stand open-mouthed, gaping at. He is a leader and master, and the stage is his circus ring.
Don Powell has always been loud, always on time, always driving forward. What was different at Wolverhampton Racecourse was the way that he not only dictated the speed and direction of the constant salvo of rhythmic beats, but the controlled power in which they were delivered. When the ground trembles beneath your feet, you know it’s going to be a great night ... and it was.
‘Goodbye to Jane’ started it all, then it was straight into ‘Take Me Bak ‘Ome’, but these were scene-setters, a statement that this was Slade and this was going to be an evening of Slade music. Don Powell’s ‘Look What You Dun’ was the climax of the first part of a long set that comprised three sections – like a great classical concert, but a different meaning of the word ‘classical’. Don’s track showed his respect for, and encouragement of, Dave Hill’s musicianship, perhaps a statement about their enduring relationship that has lasted 53 years.
The set slowed for Everyday ... ‘when I’m away I’m thinking of you’; as the open air crowd sang joyously. Then Coz I Luv You; Run, Run Runaway; Far Far Away; My Baby Left Me; and Mama We’re All Crazee Now. As the finale drew near it was time for Get Down and Get With It, and a succession of encores – My Oh My; Cum On Feel The Noiz; and the timeless, Merry Christmas Everbody.
When I was faced with seeing the band again after all these years, and without Jim Lea, a recognised music maestro, and Noddy Holder, who’s distinctive voice almost fashioned the sound of 70s music, I feared some disappointment. The result was oddly different. Forty years ago there were four different personalities, each displayed through music and their personalities: today Dave and Don are the ‘stars of the show’ and show a musical talent that has been honed and toned over the years.
Mal and John took a back seat – well, it was Slade’s homecoming to Wolverhampton – but they slot easily and comfortably into their roles. What helps is that, while years ago they strutted their stuff as Glam Rock stars, today they let their music do the talking. Mal can be front man, a singer, a guitarist and, where needed, a bassist. John’s bass is simply a part of the man and he makes it sing and delve deep into Don Powell’s rhythms.
What’s really different? Dave Hill no longer wear’s glitter that would confuse the International Space Station – although the drone that buzzed the crowd was a little un-nerving; John does not clamber like a multi-disjointed climber over the stacks like Jim Lea did; and Mal is a little more laid back than Noddy Holder. But today’s Slade is a highly professional, musically talented, outfit that is well worth seeing. Someday they’ll have to call a halt, but there’s a lot of gigs to go before then. Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be: it’s got a whole lot more exciting.

Ringo Starr and The Beatles Beat
Don has been pleased to write the Forward for a new e-book that has been published about Ringo Starr. (As we all know Ringo was a great influence and an idol of Don's - so he jumped at helping out with the project).
The book is: 'Ringo Starr and the Beatles Beat- Part One 1962 - 1968' which has been written by Alex Cain and Terry McCusker. Terry is an old pal of Don's - he was drummer in 70's band Colonel Bagshot and later went on to play with Bunny (who supported Slade on their 1975 UK Tour and European Tour). Terry said: "The book has taken three years and lots of rewrites - but it finally saw the light on day last Monday (17 August)". The e-book can be downloaded from all the usual iTunes and Amazon type sites. For Amazon details click here... |
Don meets the Bellamy Brothers
Thursday 6th August - Today I did my usual stint at the fitness centre in Silkeborg at 06:00am.
During the afternoon I went to the Radisson Hotel for afternoon tea. I met Danish promoter Stig there He was having lunch with the Bellamy Brothers - famous for “Let Your Love Flow” (which reached #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. in 1976).... The brothers are David Milton Bellamy and Homer Howard Bellamy.
They were lovely guys. The reason they are in Denmark is that they were playing a Country Music Festival here.....
During lunch David Milton Bellamy said to me: “ You guys (Slade) never took America home did you? Why do you think that was? I heard you were smokin’ on stage as a band “.....

Big Fat Snake

Saturday 25th July 2015
Some time ago, I was contacted by my friend Torben (the guitarist with the band “The Glam”), who asked if I could possibly be “guest drumming” and play “Far Far Away” with them at “Varde Open Air” festival where they were to celebrate the bands 25th anniversary on Saturday July 25th.
Hanne and myself left our house around lunchtime to drive and meet our very good friends Mikael Helmuth (from the Team Theatre in Herning) and his girlfriend Anne at her parents summer house in “Vejers Strand”, on the west coast of Jutland, to have lunch with them all.......
From there we drove to Varde were the festival was being held. To my great surprise, my favourite Danish band “Big Fat Snake” was also on the bill. I got to meet them (great guys) and have my photo taken with them before their show. One of my all times favourite songs is one of theirs called “Be Alone With Me”. I took great pleasure in telling them so they were a bit surprised as it was a song they recorded many years ago.......... A great show they did, we all sat in the audience to watch.......
‘The Glam’ were next; they played many songs from the ‘70’s. THEN, it was my turn to go on stage to play with them, there were about 3000 people standing in the pouring rain... About half way through’ Far Far Away’ their arrangement was for all the instruments, except the drums, to drop out and let the crowd sing on their own........ A great spectacle!
A FANTASTIC DAY, DESPITE THE RAIN.

Don explains pic from Australian Tour 1973...

Don has explained for the website a photo that has come to light of him and Nod on the tour bus with Status Quo in Australia in early 1973:
"This is us on tour in Australia in 1973 with our old mates Quo.
As you can see, we were in ‘festive’ spirit (and drinking some). Alan (Nuff) Lancaster had already ripped my vest - later we proceeded to pull all the palm trees out of the display round the fountain at the front of the hotel that where were staying in Sydney.
We also had many food fights on our internal flights over there (like kids). All of our clothes were in such a state, we decided to take them off (on the plane) - WHICH resulted in the pilot threatening to land at the next city and kick us all off. He didn’t, BUT on every flight after that we had a police escort on each of our internal flights....... Us and Quo have remained the very best of buddies ever since..... HAPPY TOURING DAYS....."

Don remembers the connection with The Doctor..
On reading the George Layton story (below) Don has remembered his past connection with him...
"George being a very prolific scriptwriter approached me to write the theme music for a new 'sit-com' that he was writing called 'Executive Stress'. The series was due to star Penelope Keith I think...
I wrote the song and recorded it (I still have the tapes), BUT the producer/director had already commissioned Ronnie Hazlehurst to write the tune... He had written so much other tv theme music, that they used his piece..."
Executive Stress was shown on ITV between 1986 and 1988. Three series were filmed and it starred Penelope Keith, Peter Bowles and Geoffrey Palmer.

Don gets a message from The Doctor
Webmaster received a message from the recent Slade Fan Convention compere, Nigel Hart, today (Thursday 7 May).
It said: "You must tell Don that I was on the 245 Bus in NW London (Don's old stomping ground) going to Golders Green Station yesterday and who should sit next to me but the actor George Layton (Dr In The House etc).
Anyway, he overheard me talking to my mobile phone about the footage a mate shot of me doing the Don Q&A at the convention. When I hung up he said to me "You weren't talking about Don Powell the drummer by any chance were you?" "Yes", I replied.
"Oh do pass on my very best to him, tell him George said 'hello'" What a small world eh??"

Photo riddle solved at Bilston fan event...
Jeremy King travelled from Weymouth in Dorset to the Slade fan event in Bilston last weekend.
He bought with him a black and white photo which he had a burning question about... He had owned the photo for years (which had never been published in the press), and always presumed that the guy pictured with Slade might have been Radio DJ Emperor Rosko.
However, Don remembered the story behind the picture. The guy in the middle was John Fruin, the Head of Polydor Records. He got the band together in London to celebrate the success of 'Merry Xmas Everybody' in December 1973 - and presented them each with 'state of art' black and white TVs.
Whatever happened to Don's TV? Well, he gave it to an old girlfriend who probably wishes that she still had it, as these relics are now worth a fortune!

Don keeps in touch with the new residents at his Mum and Dad's house
Don was so pleased to be allowed to visit his Mum and Dad's old house in Bilston - that he has kept in touch with the new residents by email. He sent on the following email chain:

"Hi to you both Darren & Belinda
It was SO wonderful to meet you both on Saturday.
It was a bit emotional for me ( fighting back the tears....)
BUT it made me very happy to be there in your wonderful company.
SO many memories came flooding back as you can imagine, especially seeing Mary, next door.
Darren, I’ve been looking through your Historical Guide to East Park. What a, fantastic job you’ve done there..................
AGAIN seeing the photos from my time there, the memories came flooding back.... I always wondered why there were boat houses there. Now I know.......
I would love to come and see you again and have a ‘cuppa’ and talk some more.
Once again, SO lovely to meet you both.
Please lets keep in touch".

"Thank you very much for your email, it was our pleasure to have you visit your old home. We were all nervous and at the same time excited by your visit but you made us all feel relaxed, and we are all very pleased that we were able to help in anyway.
The East Park Guide is something that I’ve been working on for a number of years and I’m glad it was of some use.
Saturday 25th was a very special day for us, invited to watch the cult film, ‘Slade in Flame’ which I had not seen before, the Q&A afterwards which was a behind the scenes treat and the highlight of the afternoon. Thank you.
On the evening we came along to the Robin 2 Club to hear the Tribute Band 'Slyde' playing and singing some very memorable Slade hits; it was my first time at a ‘Gig’ and it was a fantastic experience to see you play.
Your Biography is an interesting read and it was very kind of you to sign it for us. Belinda has nearly finished your book, and it goes without saying it would be a privilege for us to be able to extend our hospitality to you in the future".

Don catches up with family on trip back to UK
Don always tries to catch up with family on his trips home to the Midlands. Last weekend he caught up with his sister Marilyn and her husband John.
He visited them at their Wolverhampton home on the Sunday, after the 'Slade In Flame' showing the previous day... Whilst inspecting a family photo collage, that they had been presented with for their 40th wedding anniversary, he found it included a pic of him taken in the USA that he had never seen before...
